Thread: Does Flash advertisements suck up the cpu power ?

While I was visiting cricinfo.com today, I noticed that my lappys cpu power was constantly above 55% usage although I was not doing anything with my computer except visiting that website. So, I moved to another website and immidiately the cpu usage dropped down. When I came back to cricinfo.com again, the cpu usage also jumped above 55%. I noticed that, there was a flash advertisement on that site which I suspect was the culprit for doing this.

So, are those companies using MY machines cpu power to advertise THEIR products ???

Yeah, but thats not how I would put it, it's not like they are stealing your CPU power. Its just that your browser has to think harder to display their adds.

I am currently writing on my Master Project Diploma Work about Rich Internet Applications and I can ensure you, that very soon, websites will start using your cpu power for much more than displaying ads.

If they wanted to, they could probably run a distributed algorithm on your compute while you're on their website to lower their server workload. All the new technologies like Ajax, Flash, Flex (including Adobe Apollo), Microsoft Presentation Foundation (.NET), ActiveX, Java Applets or Java Web Start can be used for whatever purpose as long as you are able to run that specific technology on your system and you stay on their site.

Koni, please keep me posted when it's done. I'm interested to hear what you have to say about it; if we can, if it is necessary to avoid web sites like that because, initially, it sounds rather harmful to John Q. Public.

yeah...but its making my machine hot

Some sites allows to disable the flash advert but not all

I understand the usability and practicality of distributed applications. However, using my resources against my will cannot be accepted. I certainly don't want to see some stupid adverts (using my resources) that I'm not interested in. Its more like spamming

From now on, I'm gonna boycott those websites that uses these kinda things against my wish

I wouldn't have noticed the problem too if I weren't using my laptop. I never noticed it while using a desktop. So, in general, its not a problem as long as someone is using a desktop for surfing the net but for laptops its a little different story where I certainly don't want my cpu running above 55%-60% constantly and getting hot...

I just found out about ad block plus for firefox a few weeks ago. I can't express how better and faster internet surfing has become ever since.
