    windows memory - where?

Ok, if you run windows (and a lot of us tortured souls do) - in fact that probably adds to the torture. Anyway --

If you say open a folder and a text document and shut windows down without closing them (tsk tsk) they are still present when you restart, in the same state (minimised, max'd - whatever)
now the data in memory is erased when the system powers down, so where is this information stored?

Some applications will store filenames of open documents in the registry.

Depends on the application your using to open the text document.
