So, any word on this? On a board this size, if you two are really really busy, you should probably have a backup plan.

edit: Hell, you've already got multiple longtime mods in Europe. Even if they don't want to do it, there are plenty of other longtime posters from there that would be a good choice.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I was talking about when I quit as a mod, though.

While it's an interesting idea, it wouldn't have helped this problem. In order for that admin to be effective, they'd have to have root access to the server because most problems affect the entire site - rather than just the board. Alex isn't compfortable giving out that information to anyone, myself included, so another admin wouldn't make of an impact on these kinds of problems.

I can appreciate that Alex wants to keep information like that to himself (this is his baby, after all), but it's still a little silly that no one else is able to bring the site back up. It was stuck on that CPanel login screen all day on Friday when stuff booted back up. You shouldn't need root access to the server to log in there, should you?

No, but you'd need the CPanel password. I imagine someone could do a lot of damage if that password fell into the wrong hands.

Sure, that's why you don't make some random chump an admin. There are plenty of people here who have been posting for years and years; it's not like I suggested we have a contest to give the 10,000th member admin rights.

Yes, but still. The more people who know a secret, the more likely it is to be compromised.

And if two people knew the password, and one wanted to change it, [s]he would have to let the other person know, which would be a hassle, so the password wouldn't get changed as often, so security would be decreased . . . .

If I was in charge of a site as nice as CBoard I'd make a complete backup before giving anyone a password that let them do anything, and I'd want to know the recipient's address and phone number at least.
