What happened?
I'm not immature, I'm refined in the opposite direction.
I think it's about the "Hussein Hanged" thread. Yeah, I've got a similar problem in another forum debating about similar sensitive issue. And it quickly turned to a never ending place of mockery and flaming.Originally Posted by BobMcGee123

It wasn't about the 'Hussein hanged' thread. All of us decided that it was time for that thread to die and so we came to a mutual agreement to close it....and the mods honored that agreement.
This particular instance was a moron who posted items he had for sale in a thread. 100% against the forum rules as well as placing his title in all CAPS.
But my thanks goes to the mods not just for that post but for the many they daily delete, edit, and maintain. It's just that this particular post made me appreciate just how important our mods are.

on another site my thread about the issues with vista had one person wanting to hijack it into a diatribe against file sharing.
for some reason he stopped posting when I posted that respecting copyright on movies is fine, telling someone they cannot watch the dvd they just bought is going to far.
it's not easy moderating any board, and if we can do anything to help the mods, we should.
I personally tend to ignore threads that irritate me rather than keep them alive by posting to them. ignoring a thread is insulting to the poster, if they are out to get reactions. they stop posting if their posts don't get a response.
for the spam threads selling stuff, I see a fair number of those on other boards, by drawing them to the attention of the mods / staff, the poster is banned and thread deleted faster than by responding to the thread.
[ for some reason Techrepublic gets a lot of these threads, and they getdeleted as soon as any staff member is online. ( TR is not moderated, only the CNET staff can do anything, and they are admins not moderators ) ]
All excellent views, but the underlying question remains. And that is why would a thread starter post such a topic in the first place? I know 95% of topics are programming related, but any other topic, especially on the GD boards is welcome. Almost all the posts I have read and replyed to are by people who are ligit posters who care about the subject and do nor voilate the rules of the board. So why do a very small percentage of people come on here to mess this up for others?
I do not know the reason why. One very intersting thread was the one on hackery. A common thing that unfortunatly still happens today. A good topic and well worh debating.
I do overall agree with Bubba. The Mods do an A+ job on this board, Better than one of the other VB community boards I wsa a member of ages ago,

Maybe we should have it so that you need a PayPal account to start threads? 10c per opinion? I don't know what that is in real (my) money but at least spammers would make Alex some cash.
Why do we still get pop-up ads and adware? Because whether you click on the product link or not... someone does and statistically it pays off regardless of whether it gets deleted just minutes after they post.

Ahh... the money thing. It solves all problems doesn't it?
But I would happily move on to any place where I wouldn't have to pay to post.
