    Obviously, you haven't played those oldies gems, right?

    Come to think of it, I've made a text based game with batch file scripting back in the DOS days (loved the "echo"s and "goto"s back then). Dunno where they are now though. All my disks were ruined. And even if they weren't, I think it would be useless as they were 5 1/2 inches disks.

    There wasn't much story in either half-life, you know how the world changed from part one to two but you don't learn anything about who you are or why you're saving the world. It was fun though.

    Half Life singleplayer was only OK, same with Halo.
    I had fun beating them once but there's no replay value at all. With the multiplayer of those games, though (well the CS mods to HL), I could play them all day...
    If by oldie gems you mean like old nintendo? Yea I played those, mario, zelda, sonic (sega), and they were the best... best because there was no online multiplayer to compete! I need some action, now, too

    I still enjoy playing Multiplayer FPSes once and a while. But arguably they aren't that great. I think in years to come we will look back at these games and think how could we have had so much fun with them.

    Although I've not been buying any more FPSes since Return to castle Wolfenstein, I think today games still have the same problems.

    First, action is too fast an not in touch with reality. The time between standing still and achieving top speed when running is 0. And this has a big impact in gameplay.

    Second, the vertical axis is exaggerated to the point of making jumping the best frag avoider technique. You don't really see in real life people jumping like kangaroos to avoid bullets.

    Third, There's no consideration to injuries. You perform the same whether you are close to death or in top shape.

    Fourth, because of the last there is really no point in tactic playing. You could develop a map for small firearms and enjoy some real-life action instead of running away from someone with a rocket launcher. But you would not kill anyone with a "pansy" assault rifle in today's FPSes.

    Fifth, many other things like instant weapon switching, instant healing, bandwidth constraints for in-game voice communications, yadda yadda.

    So, saying multiplayer is all that matters may really only be true in the near future. Right now, if you like me are after more realism and true real time action, then you will be instead dissapointed at multiplayer and stick to single-player.

    @Mario: Ever played Rainbow Six: Raven Shield? It's a bit dated but might be up your alley. They're making another like it, Rainbow Six: Vegas (?), since the latest one took a deviation into arcade run-and-gun (which wasn't a good move in my oppinion).

    Unfortunately never came around to buy it. I did hear good things about Rainbow Six back then, but have to concede I always dismissed them as being just buzz. Maybe with a bit of truth here and there, but nonetheless just over rated opinions... how many of us have heard "best FPS multiplayer experience" before, only to be thrown more of the same?

    Maybe that was a mistake.

    Mario, you seem to be missing the fact that real life isn't really all that fun and exciting, which is the whole point of playing games in the first place. Things are exaggerated on purpose.

    Oh. I agree. But damn me if I wouldn't enjoy playing a realistic simulation of military combat
    I guess I'm just biased towards FPSes in this sense. They bore me otherwise. I'm a lot more lenient on other game types.

    I would pay to seat at one of the chairs on some of the US military departments using V.I.C.E for training http://vice.d-a-s.com/, or some of the emerging technologies described here http://www.military-training-technol...cfm?DocID=1722.

    I can't seem to remember the name of the new system being used by some of the US armed forces. It was on te news just a few days ago over here. But it put VICE to shame with head-to-head combat simulations between students on avery realistic environment in urban settings. One bullet and you are out... now, ain't that a rush?

    Curiously enough I think we will get there eventually in terms of entertainment. Microsoft Flight Simulator is already an example of a entertainment environment being turned into training due to the realism involved. DAS, the suppliers of VICE, also sell bits of the technology to the game industry

    Well not only the nintendo, but the old 70 - 90's games. Try these games and see what I mean:
    1. Day of the Tentacle
    2. Monkey Island
    3. System Shock 1 & 2
    4. Planescape: Torment
    5. The Longest Journey (this one isn't too old, the early 2000 I think.)

    IMHO, multiplayer games are only superior in interactivity between players and that's it.

    System Shock?? Are you serious? That same that is considered One of The Best FPS Games Ever Made or are you talking about some problem with your computer and the power plug?
