    >>I have a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT4,

those are pretty cool. Light and fast. I raced one the other night and beat it by more than a car length though
I doubt it was a stage 3 Neon.

whats the difference between a base SRT4 and a stage 3?

    also, my car 0-60: 5.25s, 1/4 mile: 13.84

it's a damn fast car and not many people know about it. BTW there are only 5000 of them made for the States each year.

Stage 3 refers to a certain level of aftermarket performance upgrades to the engine, among other things. What he's saying is his Neon isn't stock and being Stage 3, it's really far from it. If I had to guess, assuming equal driving abilities, I'd say his upgraded Neon should outrace your Mazdaspeed6. However, no one is denying that the Mazdaspeed6 is a good car, in fact it's probably the best stock car named in this thread.

I know what the "stages" refer too. But is it a number pulled out of thin air - or are there specific modifications that make it a stage 3? is this something offered by dodge? or can any owner wih extra mods call there car a stage X.

As far as I know the neon I raced was bone stock, except for three gauges on the drivers side front window panel.

Well, there is a specific and well known Stage 3 SRT4. I don't know the details of it, but it's pretty good... you could google it, I'm sure. As for "Stage 3" itself... I don't know the exact specifications, it's just better than Stage 1 and 2... I'm sure there is a specific requirement to be considered Stage 3. Again, google is your friend.

Dodge used to have site that explained the stages, however, the Dodge Caliber has taken the place of the Neon so I'm not sure you will find any info on that at their site.

Just google Dodge Neon SRT4 stage 3 and you will get hits galore. It will nearly outperform a Porsche turbo, eats the Subaru Impreza STI AWD for breakfast, and I know firsthand at our local strip it literally destroyed a souped up Trans Am Firebird (new body style, V8, WS6 with aftermarket upgrades).

Fortunately for most racers very few Neon's have been modded to stage 3 which is probably due to the 4k price tag and the fact that normal gas just won't cut it at stage 3. The estimated HP at stage 3 is around 355 with 20+ PSI boost and I'm not sure about the actual torque output. 0 to 60 as I said is in the Porsche range and will also beat stock Viper 0 to 60. The stock, stage 0, Neon beats a stock Viper to 30, but not to 60. Viper gets it in about 4.2 to 4.4 and a Neon gets to 60 in about 5.2 to 5.4. Still quite impressive numbers for a small 4 door compact car. I can vouch firsthand that you do NOT want to hit the max boost in a turn or if you have anything slick on the road, be it rain, snow, or just plain grease and oil. Once you hit the max boost it'a helluva ride all the way to 135 and for stage 3, it tops at 156. The stock Neon will do 145, but it's limited to 135 AFAIK.

The Neon gets its strength from it's power to weight ratio. The thing is so light and so powerful that it is ideal for racing (drag racing that is). However the Neon is NOT an easy car to race in. It is extremely difficult to correctly launch this car since the turbo boost swells to near 15 PSI at 2500 RPM and doesn't let off all the way to red line at 6250. The Neon's stock 5.5 tires are simply not wide enough to get enough rubber on the road and thus they break loose horribly in first through mid second and often at the bottom of third. If you powershift this car you are in for one hell of a ride. My car tends to wheel hop at max boost in 1st and 2nd and skips a bit in 3rd. Because of this I would say I have never correctly launched this car. The boost comes on extremely fast and the shift points are very hard to hit because it flashes so quick. 3rd gear is a pain in the arse and if you aren't careful you will hit 1st instead. The shifts are notchy just like my 90 Talon TSI AWD but they are far more definite and hard than the Talon. Talon had very mushy shifts and the Neon does not suffer from this at all.

Even though it's an odd platform, the Neon in the hands of the right driver is a definite contender and not to be taken lightly.

I believe the engine in the Neon is the same one in the PT Cruiser Turbo and I also think the Mitsu engine they put in it is the same engine they stuck in the '03 and '04 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cylinders (every model but the GT). But they turbo charged it and done a lot of modifications to the air intake system and exhaust system as well as ECM and its software.

There are tons of aftermarket upgrades for the car but I'm probably not going to do anything to it. I highly recommend either picking one up (only 3000 2005's were made), or at least driving one.

I'm not sure why the driver would have a pillar gauge setup b/c the Neon has good stock gauges to begin with. Some 'wannabe's' out there dress the car all up to look fast but rarely do anything to the actual performance. I'm not a big fan of driver side pillar gauges and all that crap. It's all about performance.

Yes, I agree... I'm all up for interior and exterior stylings, but as far as I come, performance takes a higher priority. Buy the better Engine/Suspension/Transmission/Turbo Kit, then buy your Body Kits and spoilers and Carbon Fiber whatever...

The only think I would mod before performance is interior entertainment... I've seen people mod their navigation to display DVDs and what have you... I think that's pretty sweet and a worthy upgrade if you're into that.
