An Asteroid is going to DESTROY EARTH!

Been keeping up with this? Oh. My. God. Scary.

    http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/10/20/meteor.shtml

I'm sure that within the next 20 years we'll come up with
*something* that'll save us. Like a giant force field that
    protects the entire planet.

Do you suppose "global catastrophe" is a euphamism for the End of the World?

[Apolgies for not following the links.]

When I was growing up the world was supposed to come to and end in the 1990's.

Oh blah day, oh blah dah, nah na na nah life goes on.

1000 meters... at least 300 of it burns away, then it bashes into the deepest ocean... and there's nothing wrong with us

I think the meteor going into the ocean is the worst thing that can happen...

For you maybe , I don't live near ocean coast.

The scientist said that such a collision may cause a global catastrophe. The asteroid is about 1000 meters in diameter and all astronomical bodies over 100 meters in diameter are considered dangerous.
That's still 700 meters of DANGER!

But they can launch a space ship to land on the asteroid and fill it with nuclear bombs.
1km is easy job for nuclear bombs.

I've never seen Armageddon. The song that Arrowsmith
did for the soundtrack just sucked too hard.

Deep Impact, on the other hand, ruled... from what I saw of it,
anyway... Which was the middle 15 minutes or so. Brilliant.

Sometimes I don't know if you're being serious or not, ethic. I mean, it's, what, 20 years away. The number of physical variables which could come into play in those decades are ... well unthinkable, and even more so, unpredictable. I'm not an applied mathematician, but the astroid is what ... ~20*356*24*(it's speed towards us, im MPH) miles away, right. That's rather large. Their ratios are massive. Try shooting a dot on the sun with a pistol and I'd say you'd have equal odds. Note. the bullet you shoot would have to be a number of thousand times smaller than the dot. I'll write a formal apology to you though if in twenty years it turns out it's gonna hit the earth.

I didn't come up with this. You don't have to apologize to me.
I don't why know you think this is based on research that *I* did.

    Look!

“We cannot exclude the possibility that the asteroid which is now orbiting the Sun will collide with the Earth in 2035,” the agency quoted the observatory spokesman Sergei Smirnov as saying. “But it will be only in 2028 that we will be able to determine the danger level,” the scientist added.
Guess what. These scientists are applied mathematicians. They
know more about this stuff than you. And I'm pretty sure they
understand the variables that need to be taken into account. They
understand them so well, that they've even said that a definitive
answer on whether or not this asteroid will hit earth isn't even
possible until 2028; and that if it does hit earth, it'll be in 2035.

Chunks of stuff from space hit Earth all the time. Big ones even. Just
visit Arizona. The crater there even has its own website:

ST. PETERSBURG, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - Astronomers at Russia's largest observatory said Friday an asteroid now orbiting the sun may strike the Earth in 2035, but that the odds of a catastrophic collision can be estimated only 22 years from now.

"We cannot rule out the possibility of an asteroid, currently orbiting the sun, striking the Earth in 2035," said Sergei Smirnov, spokesman for St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Observatory. "But how much of a threat [this asteroid actually presents] will be impossible to assess until 2028, when it approaches our planet."

Flying in close proximity to the Earth will alter the asteroid's orbit, and scientists believe the extent of that shift will give them a clue as to the likelihood of future impacts, fraught with disastrous consequences for terrestrial life.

"[Celestial] bodies measuring 100 meters across or more are deemed dangerous," Smirnov said. "Such bodies, comparable in size to the Tunguska meteorite [that impacted Siberia in 1908], could cause a disaster on a regional scale in the event of an impact."

But the space rock expected to near the Earth in 2028 is about a kilometer in diameter, so if it does strike, our planet will face a continental disaster and major climate change.

"And if the asteroid falls into an ocean, the disaster could assume global proportions," warned Smirnov.

Send Dethklok in outerspace , they'll make the comet metal and it'll destroy the galaxy.

I agree with you, ethic, to some degree, but I still find it VERY unlikely that this may happen. I may be wrong, in which case I'll revive this topic and say sorry. All the movies say we'll survive though.

2038? Won't we have the federation and the Starship Enterprise by then? Surely the Vulcans will provide us with a logical answer.
