Why the Penguin?
'Tux', the official Linux mascot, looks more like a cuddly toy than a corporate logo. But according to Linus Torvalds, this is exactly the image he was looking for when he chose a penguin to represent Linux: "When you think 'penguin', you should be imagining a slighly overweight penguin, sitting down after having gorged itself, and having just burped. It's sitting there with a beatific smile - the world is a good place to be when you have just eaten a few gallons of raw fish and you can feel another burp coming.'

My 2K machine is downloading in the nights, so I never shut it down. It never crashes on me. When I shut it down now, because I have to go and don't have downloads running, it has been started and online, downloading and playing games for 4 days straight. Not a hint of problems.

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
Then ask a smart question.
My software runs 24 /7. Server is 2K, slaves 98SE. We are VERY careful in our code for mem leaks.
We reboot once week in case the Windows counter runs out and loops. Don't like to reboot as the 20+ PC's are 10Km from the nearest person, locked inside a sea container in the outback, with only a salt mine and a train track nearby. They run OK but sometimes refuse to reboot correctly.

One time I saw a screenshot of a BeOS box running for 2+ years. If you go to "About BeOS..." under the BeOS equivalent of the Start menu, it shows how long the system has been running accurate to seconds....
I wish I still had that screenshot....
Win xp is pretty f*c*i*g far from stable if you have a VIA chipset based motherboard. VIA must employ the worlds worst driver writers.Other than that winxp certainly looks good just wish VIA would get their heads out of their asses and write some good drivers.
One problem I have found with winxp is that sometimes it can have trouble reading dvds. You get an error saying something about it being unreadable or corrupted but if you go to my computer and right click the dvd drive, properties, hardware, select dvd drive, properties, volumes, populate then the dvd becomes readable until you take it from the drive or reboot.Any ideas why that happens and why populate works?

I've had NT4 based machines running for months without incident. My home 9x machine can be a little fussy if I use Windows Explorer a lot, but generally programming, I have no trouble with that either.

Hmm...my XP machine upstairs was running for a week or two, but I had to shutdown because King's Quest VI crashed oh well.
Ok, I get that windows machines can actually run for a while, but after even a day or so of running, or even just after a few hours constantly using it (even when I just leave it on for like 8 hours) I notice it gets really slow...like it repaints windows after like 4 hours. Does that happen to you guys? I get so annoyed with it I reboot just for that.
My 2000 Pro machine is on constantly and hasn't crashed yet. Damn I'm LUCKY!
