    a little laugh

I was looking through the user manual of my old 486 that we used to have. It brought a few laughts, and old memories. Here are some statements from the Gateway 2000 user's manual written in 1993:

"Thank you for buying Gateway 2000's Local Bus computer system. The system accepts a wide range of Intel CPU chips - everything from the economical 80486SX/25 to the incredibly fast 80486DX2/66"

"The problem with ISA bus is that its slow 8 Mhz speed and 16-bit data path are simply inadequate for today's blazingly fast video cards and hard disk drives."

"VESA local bus bypasses the ISA bus and creates a faster, local path direct to the CPU...This makes a significant improvement in performance, particularly when running graphics-intensive software like Windows and Windows applications."

A user manual of a vga card that I used in the past:

Quote Originally Posted by "VL-41 VGA VL-Bus Accelerator - S3805
The S3805 advanced graphics accelerator provides excellent graphics performance at high resolutions and at a low cost. The S3 805 can support a 70Hz monitor refresh rate at a resolution of 1024*768 with 256 colors.

This feature, plus the ability to display 16.8 million colors at a resolution of 640*480 provide the flexibility to meet a wide range of user needs.

    ...

Graphics operations are significantly accelerated because this pathway is 32 bits wide and operates at local bus speeds up to 33Mhz. The data transport rate over the VL-Bus is more than 6 times that of a 16-bit ISA bus.
Also there's this tabel which shows what video modes are supported, they put '*' with some entries like "1280*1024 with 256 colors".
The * means: "*These modes require 2 Mbytes of display memory."

The installation at that time was not so obvious since there was the need to include 40 pages on how one should install this card and install the drivers etc etc...

I'm glad those days are gone ( although sometimes I miss those days , where I would play a DOS game and be like "wooot this game is so nice" even if it was only using 256 or less colors ...).

i got one coming....i need to be able to link photos to the thread...but that presents a problem...at the current moment i have no solid server space anywhere to upload things (my university account has been disactivated after 2 years, even if the site technically still exist).

I must admit that I haven't bought a new computer game in quite a while. I've gotten much more entertainment from playing older games. I recently found a decent Windows port of Glider (which I used to love as a kid), and NetHack is a viciously tough, yet amazingly well thought-out game. The newer games may have graphics, but I think older games win the replayability award.
If I did your homework for you, then you might pass your class without learning how to write a program like this. Then you might graduate and get your degree without learning how to write a program like this. You might become a professional programmer without knowing how to write a program like this. Someday you might work on a project with me without knowing how to write a program like this. Then I would have to do you serious bodily harm. - Jack Klein
