And just because people are separated by who knows how many miles of copper or fiber, they're somehow less human? That's kind of like making prank calls to the whitehouse and then claiming that "it's just the telephone, people!" when the FBI comes to get your butt.

A lot of work goes into building and maintaining a smoothly running community. You can trivialize it all you want, but it's really no different in concept than protecting your property from vandals.

Could be. I won't deny that a feeling of power is a motivating force for not a few people on the web.

Rules are set up for a reason. If they're not enforced, the community will begin a downward spiral and probably never recover. If you spent years getting gamedev up and running to your satisfaction and then somebody started a chain of events that could destroy it, what would you do?

Do you realize that a lot of forum owners actually make a living with it? Dani over at Daniweb quit school to maintain her site and forum full time. She makes a living off it, and could sell it at any time for quite a bit more than you would expect. Perhaps you should get *that* through *your* thick skull and respect the effort that so many people put into such things.

There's still a strong imagery of the internet being the place were everything is possible. Where social interaction has few, if any, rules, and one can say whatever it comes to their minds. Mostly this comes from that strange feeling of security people get from being for the most part anonymous.

The internet has not many rules, true. Nothing much other than those set by the TCP/IP protocol. However social interaction does have them. On the streets, at home, at work, over the phone, on the internet, and between little green men from Mars and blue jelly fishes from Xparkhzyan.

Irresponsibility is not breaking the rules here and there. It is thinking that it will have no consequences and worst; complaining when it did have consequences.

The "It is just the internet" (whatever that may mean) that allowed you to say whatever you want, is the same "It is just the internet" that allowed someone to ban you.

Consequences, lad. That's the keyword.

This has to be the most immature, useless thread this board has seen in a long time. Your post reeks of a teenage, know-it-all, the-rule-don't-apply-to-me attittude that makes me want to vomit.

Let me make things real clear for you. This is how things work in the really real world - which includes the internet:
GameDev set up their forum with certain rules. One of which was avoiding rude behavior, another was not creating an account once you've been banned. You joined this site voluntarily, and by doing so agreed to abide by their rules. No one made you join. You chose to. Knowing the rules, you broke them. For rude behavior, you were banned. Instead of waiting out your 'sentence' or making amends to be reinstated, you violated another rule. You were caught ban-evading, and awarded a shiny new perma-ban. Now you act surprised and indignant that they did exactly what they said they would if you broke their rules. You voluntarily agreed to their rules and punishments when you joined. Deal with it.

Your theory (only correct in some cases) that mods get off on the power of banning people is very analogous to you. You take the 'power' of anonymity on the internet to mean you can do what you want, when you want, because no one can punish you "in real life."

In 30 years or so when you finally move out of your parents house, you'll understand.
*edit*(Now of course, Sentral, I'm taking a chance with that last line, as it is technically in violation of CBoard's rules - #8. If there is a mod out there with a love of irony, I very well might get banned for it. I'm taking a chance, and if they ban me, I knew what I was doing and I'm just going to have to take it.)

I think there's a good few people here who'd agree.

I thought they gave you warnings first. I'm pretty sure that if you were rude for only a short period of time, and you went from no warning to a permanent IP ban, then you could probably make your case to the owners of the website.

I had a friend that emailed the owners of gamedev to convince them that he and his brother both wanted accounts, but only one could get one because they had the same IP (shared via a router). The owner of the website let them have both accounts on the same IP (otherwise, if you register another account on the same IP the new one is automatically niched).
