I program for my own amusement (and sometimes frustration!). Being 17 I can't do programming for work or in college as such. The most that's done in IT at my level is Pseudo code which isn't exactly what I had in mind. So I bought books and CDs and program in my spare time.
I'm planning to do an MEng degree in software engineering in uni though next year. Can you bring this thread back then?

I am more of a school/work/fun person.
Mostly for work and for work to come... some of it for fun/entertainment. Some to make tasks easier for myself on the computer for business... like parsing 2000-email (grouped) text files and looking for specific entries. Pain to do it by point and click... much easier to enter file name and have it spit out what I want in one second.

Because I have no life that doesn't involve the use of a modem.
I quite frequently have to do some C programming as part of assignments in physics, and occasionally in other classes at college.
I had a job doing programming last summer, and now over winter vacation I'm finishing up a few loose ends in last summer's work.
And, when I have free time, I work on various projects for fun.
So, all of the above.

It's my life ...
I always do it for fun, even when I'm working. I wouldn't even want to do it, if it wasn't fun - too exhausting sometimes just to do it. An excellent payment would, of course, also serve as a motive but within five years I have yet to come across that phenomenon

Work and sometimes I 'm working on some home projects. I started programming because of fun.
I progam most for fun than for anything else, the fun given by the olympiads, but also as 'work', my own work, the project that'll change our world (HEHEHE).

I program mostly at work. However, I truly enjoy writing code - so anytime a nifty open source project comes along I'll spend my evenings and weekends on it.
Come to think of it, between HP-UX at work and Linux at home, I spend 5-10 hours a day in vi.
