    Angry Bill Gates!

I can't believe Bill Gates is leaving Microsoft! Now some other guy is going to take over and probably eff up things some more. That SOB is the symbol of Microsoft, now he just decides to leave!? It doesn't make sense to me why he would leave to progress his Gate's Foundation. Hopefully, this new guy will be better, and not leave the company in the turmoil (that might) be ahead.

People retire. As rich as Bill Gates is I am surprised he hadn't retired sooner. Bill Gates could live the rest of his life on a fraction of what he earns every year, specifically he could spend $1,000 a day for the next 170 years* and still have billions left.

    *Not exaggerating

    That's possible?

At any rate... now that he's retired and all, has billions... the real question is: can I have his retirement checks? He doesn't need it. Or maybe he can take the check and I'll take the other part.

He's leaving because he's out of touch, old, rich and not really the brain behind Microsoft anymore. He's been more of a public relations fella for the past few years. He created one of the most successful companies of all times with still a lot of future ahead. He was there when the market still battled with such "trivial" things as to what is the best office suit (I do miss those days!).

I admire the man more than I admire his work. But definitely he's the father and mother of Microsoft. I do agree it is time he closes this chapter and lives his life away from all this mess computers have brought us.

I find it interesting that Ray Ozzie (a foreigner at Microsoft) is almost the same age as Bill. He's bound to retire soon too..

It's time for Bill to leave. After all he has made his fortune and although I'm not a big fan of MS or their practices, I have nothing but respect for the man who...let's be honest...is the reason we are where we are today in computers.

I tip my hat to him. Job well done I'd say. He beat out the 'big boys' of his day while his company was on it's last limb and created one of the greatest American success stories ever.

So even as much as we knock MS here, I think we all can agree that the man deserves some respect.

I am interested to see where the company will go from here; it does seem as if ever since he seeded CEO, the company has been having a rough time.

Why do you think that? He hasn't run things for a couple years now.

    near $1,000,000 a day. 1,000 doesn't sound very impressive

I blame ballmer for most of what bad has happened. http://www.ntk.net/media/developers.mpg

Eh heh... either you inherited a nice fortune or are too young to pay your own bills.

Agreed. 1,000 a day would be wonderful... you could get three very nice meals and a boatload of other stuff on 1,000USD / day.

...let's be honest...is the reason we are where we are today in computers...
    Them fightin' words. :-P
Seriously, I don't know. Microsoft might've been there for some of it, but I think things would've gone along fine without them. GUIs were around before Microsoft really took over (Apple? Anyone remember OS/2 ?), and probably would've developed without them. (Off my head, I'm not thinking of any lifechanging feature in GUIs that MS is responsible for.) Otherwise... what? IE? Outlook? Windhurs?

Or there's the: Yeah, just think how much further we could be...

Actually now that you mentioned it, Cactus-man I think that Microsoft would be responsible for some of the biggest headaches in the tech world. I'm sure there is a sizeable group that believes IE destroyed the Internets thanks to the browser wars...

as well as people who miss using telnet port 80 to get webpages.

    When men were men...

Anyway, I'm sure that running 95% of the world's computers counts for something.

    (Apple? Anyone remember OS/2 ?),
3 dev teams. 1 working on OS/2. 1 working on Windows. 1 working on a joint project.

    End result:

    OS/2 released by IBM
    Windows released by Microsoft
Joint project never saw the light of day - probably a cover to make it look like both sides were working together, when they both were planning secretly to go their separate ways.

OS/2 is an OS by IBM for x86. This does not make it anything Apple. Apple dropped the ball. Both got their GUI technology from Xerox so in the end........Xerox dropped the ball.

It's not the inventor who makes the money, it's the man who can best exploit the invention.

    OS/2 was the joint project
