Lightwave 7. 0 has the most advanced/powerful renderer on the planet(no ****), nothing can touch its lighting IT EVEN DOES PRISIMS RIGHT!!!FOR ****S SAKE!! and the modeler is oh so sweet... though i can't as yet do crap with it, but only for a lack of trying.

It even comes wit an SDK and a scripting language, with tools... or you can just download the SDK...

Lightwave is a very good modeler, HOWEVER, in contrast to what no-one has said, it is NOT the most powerful. Maya is the most powerful. Ask any movie animator or game animator and they will tell you that Maya is the most powerful. 3ds Max is also very nice, but not as powerful as Maya. 3ds Max and Lightwave are about the same in terms of power. Another good modeling program is Creator. It is pretty powerful too.

If you want to get something free, you could go for Blender, which is free for download on the internet. I have forgotten the website. It is something like www.blender.nu or something like that, but I forgot. It is pretty good, has some nice features, but it has a very weird interface. It could make graphics similar to games like Mechwarrior 2. Not bad.

But definitely Maya is the most powerful. It mostly used in the making of movies, but it can be used for the making of games. 3ds Max is the most popular program used by professional game programmers and animators.

Just one small fact: The student version of Maya costs $10,000. So you better pirate if you want it.

Yes, it is a fantastic modeler, and actually, a great many films and TV shows use it (Start Trecks as of Next Gen, Stargate, Toy Story I and II, list goes on for ages).

Blender is www.blender.nl It is also a very good modeler, and the price is much better. It use to be pay, but they've gone and made it free fairly recently. Scripting, tons of modeling and scene rendering options, similar to Lightwave, and a physics engine that you can plug your own AI script into for that special touch.

    DavidP,

i must argue, I have a freind who is very deep into this and knows the intricate details of it all, and i also have looked deeply into the capabilities of the programs point being, Lightwave is the mos powerful by far, now you might ask why does everybody use maya then? good question. Heres the answer

untill just about a year ago Maya was "Overall" the best renderer, though NOT OUT OF THE BOX, anyone who uses maya in any film as a team of programmers 24/7 writing plugins to make it do even half of what you see in the movies, and this cost BIG money.

Lightwave is now the most powerful and best looking, maya has a few capabilities here and there but Lightwave has many maya does not ca can't do properly, even the makers of Maya Admit that Lightwave has a better lighting system and if im not mistake so did the 3d Studio monkeys, 3DS is way below Lightwave, and now maya is too, infact 3DS might be more powerful that Maya even... thats not a joke its the simple facts...

Big studios are switching over now, for one Squaresoft, Remember Final Fantasy the movie done with a highly(unrecognizably so) modified maya? now their switching to Lightwave. Why? its simply better, other studios are testing with it as well, but they unfortunatly are not so open about it.

    >Ask any movie animator or game animator and they will tell you that Maya is the most powerful<

Ask someone who is made to use maya or came from using 3DS Max and has never touched lightwave...thats the answer...

actually now game makers are also switching.

Ask anyone who makes TV commercials. ever see any Dodge commercials? the trucks and cars are lightwave, they're not real

LoL...3d studio max better than maya?!?! BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. My friend switched from 3d studio to Maya. He didn't even look through any tutorials and stuff, but he STILL does better things in maya than in 3d studio max. 3d studio max isn't as good as Maya.

Also, Blender is pretty cool. If you want, get Linux, and there are tons of free modelers for it.

    >i must argue, I have a freind who is very deep into this

so do i. whats your point?

    >and i also have looked deeply into the capabilities of the programs point being, Lightwave is the mos powerful by far

Are you insane? Have you ever heard of the Fullsail game design college? Have you ever asked or seen what game animators used? I know for a fact that Ensemble Studios uses 3ds Max. Pretty much every computer animated movie out there was made using Maya. The Toy Story movies, however, used the RenderMan engine.

Every single person I have asked, article I have read, etc., all say Maya is better. I also have both Lightwave and Maya and have used them both. Maya is much much much better.

Well, to each his own then. A pro in any of those packages can do amazing stuff. I read in an article that most of Toy Story I and II were done with Lightwave. I don't pretend to know a whole lot about this industry, but came from an Amiga background (where I used Lightwave) so I thought that was interesting. I don't know what the RenderMan engine is, so maybe they used both (or even more, after all, I don't see why a company wouldn't use more than one tool).

okay lets just settle this, I have lightwave, I don't have maya, I don't plan on buying maya. I don't have 3ds and I don't plan on buying it either. I do have lightwave, and I do have blender therfore now I think they are the best (just cause I have them)

so anybody know any good books on lightwave. and tutorials on blender.(last time i checked you had to buy a manual, there was no online one(that stinks) has that changed?)

BTW. Many people like different applications, they like different aproaches to the same things.

For litterally thousands of tutorials on Blender, go here: http://www.blender.nl/support/learni...c45e80bcef02d0

The book is cheap and well worth it as well, I might add.

well im not much for wanting a large arguement, but the facts are the facts,

Maya Cannot DO ANYTHING you have ever seen Maya Do. What do i mean by this? you need $8,000 to buy the program $8,000 more for all the damn plugins, and about a $100,000 to pay the programmers to make it do anything you need it to.
Maya can't even do radiosity right.

    gnu-ehacks,

your point is irrelevant and based on no fact, only opinion, so 3Ds is really hard to use, WOW big deal, in fact 3Ds Max can do effects that no other render can some of them quite amazing, May and 3DS are quite close in power reguardless, 3ds "might" be better, "might" not. (NOTE: the might in my previous statment!)

    >i must argue, I have a freind who is very deep into this

my point is he will do this for a living, thats my point.

    >
    Are you insane?
    <

    No, just well informed.

    >
Have you ever heard of the Fullsail game design college?
    <

    nope,

    >
Have you ever asked or seen what game animators used?
    <

most game makers use 3DS Max, though i cant see why, thats the fact.
    but they're switching.

    >
I know for a fact that Ensemble Studios uses 3ds Max.
    <

    see above.

    >
Pretty much every computer animated movie out there was made using Maya. The Toy Story movies, however, used the RenderMan engine.
    <

    so, and so?

besides it would cost you about a quater million dollars at least to get a version of maya that could begin to do what theirs does.

just because they use 3Ds max for most games doesn't make it better!

Lightwave is far superior even the MAKERS OF MAYA FEEL THE NEED TO LIE ABOUT ITS CAPABILITIES!!

    points at hand,
Maya's image gallery is FAKED! NOT RENDERED IN THE MAYA YOU BUY OR SOME OF THEM CANT BE RENDERED IN MAYA AT ALL!!

and guess what? Lightwaves gallery is REAL!
