DirectX 10 not compatible with XP

    Microsoft is at it again.

Forcing us to buy their new GUI body style with little or no improvement having been made to the suspension, drivetrain, or engine.

    NOTE: Windows_Vista==Windows_Longhorn

Support for XP ends at the end of 2006. So now we are forced to buy their latest and greatest huge flaming pile of poo.

I'm so sick of this trend.

Microsoft isn't going to stop supporting XP this soon. XP is their latest operating system. The support period for 95 (or was it 98) was extended because a lot of people were still using it. Obviously Microsoft isn't going to cancel support for XP only a few months after Vista is released.

I agree that Vista seems like a disappointment, though. All the new cool stuff like the new file system aren't going to make it.

Ive had enough of cool new file systems. I still use FAT32 cuz NTFS sucked on both of my volumes. I can't use FAT32 on my big drive but I use it on my OS drive. NTFS sucks.

NTFS most certainly doesn't suck. I heard about your data loss, but that had nothing to do with NTFS, if I understood it correctly. NTFS is faster and much more reliable than FAT. It has a little more overhead, so perhaps you should avoid using it on small USB memory sticks (a few hundred MB).

It had everything to do with NTFS and Defrag which is supposed to support NTFS. Look at the way it arranges files on the platter. I fail to see how head travel is minimized.

Your disk died while you were running defrag (which stresses the drive a lot). All drives break eventually. I don't really see the connection with NTFS. Microsofts defrag program isn't very good, but it won't destroy your hard drive.

NTFS has built-in algorithms to reduce fragmentation and that's probably why the arrangement of the files looks strange to you.

    >>> Support for XP ends at the end of 2006.

    That is incorrect.

At this time, there is no way MS or anyone else can say when support for XP will cease. The decision to withdraw support for a MS product has always been based on simple economics, if sufficient paying customers are using a product, it will continue to be supported whilst economic - it may not be further developed, but that is a totally different issue.

I have no issues with NTFS, works fine for me across all of my OS's and machines.

Id have to agree with Sang-drax on NTFS...I managed to resuce a disk that I would have probably lost if it were still formatted for FAT32.

With regard to the XP support issue, I remember the same issue relating to previous MS software...they allow these little warnings to circulate, but as long as the market is still heavilly invested in a certain product, MS cant drop support for it.

I hate Microsoft with an un-earthly passion. Ok so I guess in business terms they're "clever", but that's hardly a way to entice customers. Funnily enough it'll probably work and they'll be raking it in. Still.

Then millwons will be donated *cough*taxevasion*cough*.

Never had any problems with NTFS or FAT, but I do still use FAT quite a lot: shared partition between Slackware and Windows.

Wake up call - all big businesses employ an army of accountants and lawyers to reduce their tax overheads. Smaller businesses can't afford the same, but at the same time, cheat anyway figuring the authorities have bigger fish to go after, and they are often right. Your bog standard employee is the person most likely to pay full whack.

I like Microsoft right now. They give away Visual C++ 2005 for free and it is a really good compiler and IDE. I just downloaded it, but I've used both beta 1 and 2.

I've changed my perspective on Microsoft. I think they're an OK, if not great, company. Sure they can be cheap sometimes...but who the hell isn't?

Heh - I only own a copy of ME, so (as I have said before), so I just don't use Windows. I actually wanted to grab a copy of Windows X64 Professional, but they have some goofy thing where you can only get it with a new system, and I never bothered to get a copy when I bought my machine last year. I might buy a copy off Ebay, or I might not. There is really nothing I can think of that I can't do without.

the big question should be What's going to happen with game development? DirectX 9 is compatable all the way back to windows 98. If DirectX 10 is Vista only, then developers are stuck with very few options that offer more detriment than benefit. They can choose to use DirectX 10 and alienate the majority of their consumers. They can stick with DirectX9, but not get to take advantage of the new features (and if DirectX 10 isn't backwards compatable then develop games that won't run on Vista). They can spend extra resources to make their games work with both, which will mean longer development times and increase cost for consumers.
My opinion is that the transition from XP to Vista will be horrible for what I see as an already hurting PC game market. The majority of PC games released are now MMORPG, while single player has mostly shifted to consoles. If you don't believe that then take a look at PC games released this past year compared to the previous few years.
