Win xp professional or professional cowpat

I finally got around to installing winxp pro on my home computer and oh my f***king god is it poor!
    Stability..... Thats a joke!
A much better task manager that fails to be able to shutdown unruly programs and reclaim resources even less so than the win98 task manager.
    Drivers.... HAHAHA

I have a digital camera that wont work as anything other than a removeable hard disk.
A webcam that wont work online but works fine offline.

    crash after crash!

one nice touch is you dont get to see the BSOD as instead you just get force rebooted! This can be turned off ! thank god for small mercies!

    anyone else had similar experiences?
anyone actually think that this is a good os?

it seems very slow compared to win98se.

i've been running Xp for months - through the beta incarnations, the RC releases and finally the finished version. I have had very very few problems - its perfectly stable and my PCs are used (not just on) for about 15 hours per day. Not only that but i have a whole host of peripherals hanging off my main workstation - two scanners, digital camera, digital camcorder, ipaq, printer etc etc, - i had to look on the canon site originally for my scanner drivers but thats all. The only problem i did have was that the drivers written for the Aureal Vortex (as the company no longer exists) only support the first out speaker port (and my speakers at the time were plugged into port 2)

well heres what I have done so far....

    installed winxp ( fresh partition/format fat32 )

native drivers got most of the in-box stuff working.

downloaded via chipset 4 in 1 drivers for xp.

downloaded detonator 3 drivers for geforce 2 card

downloaded upgraded xp drivers for creative live soundcard.

downloaded upgraded xp drivers for creative pc300 cam.

webcam works fine with creatives software. webcam doesn't work at all for windows messenger (latest version). Yahoo messenger with webcam on produces some of the most spectacular crashes. Am totally unable to shut down yahoo or end yahoo process tree. Reboot necessary but not forced. Movie maker does this sometimes when I try to use the webcam with that.

I still have scanner, printer, gaming devices, digital camera, all without proper drivers to get working.

I have so far found winxp to be reasonably unstable and definately slow on an 850 athlon, asus a7v,256 mb pc133 ram.

The Voodoo5 WindowsXP drivers are 3rd party, and are very slow. I had to use my GeForce2, which is okay, but it it doesn't work with Maya4, which is an important program to me.

I have been running WinXP Pro for months now and it has not stalled once on me, compared to the 2 or 3 times a day Win9x stalled on me.

I love the new task manager and it frees up resources wonderfully. I hardly use over 30% of my resources, compared to Win9x, which had me down to 50% resources after 10 seconds.

I love the fact that there isnt a BSOD to blare in your face.
    BSOD free!

The only problem so far is I need a new scanner driver. That can be fixed easily, though.

    ok ok ok

I have had a mental 2 days sorting this out and I have found the root of the problem.

The problem was that im using an asus a7v mobo with the via kt133 chipset. This has some issues with USB that causes all kinds of problems with winxp only. There is no patch available. The only way to sort the problem out was to completely disable ACPI and load the standard pc HAL during installation allowing me to assign an IRQ of its own to the usb controller . Now winXP is behaving itself nicely.

ps. I still think microsoft programmers should go back to school.

I think that MS writes 'selective breaking' into their software. My friend had millions of problems with WINME, but I never had a problem with it and liked it quite a bit.

I hated WIN98se because it crashed on me all the time (which is why I upgraded to ME). He never had any problems with 98se.

So I think that it selectively and randomly doesn't work for people.

Now I am back to win98 and haven't had any problems at all. Go figure...

I like the professional operating systems. BTW using FAT32 with Win2k or WinXP is bad mistake.

I have enjoyed a very stable Win2k for about 8 months now. But I'll also add that there are still plenty of problems, not so much related to stability but to software in general. I wonder how stable the workstations become after they become networked with business servers (b to c and b to b), database servers, and .NET, etc. How well does this software work together. And as far as digital cameras, I can't tell because I have not purchased one, however I have heard stories of them not working. As far as I know WinXP is the best OS on the planet. But obviously there is still going to be some problems with it.

I have WinXP on disk, but I'm not interested in upgrading at the moment......

I am using 1 box with Win2k Pro and another with Win98......I will put the win98 up to win2k soon.

I am still very happy with 2k.......All my current software and Hardware works AOK....and the OS is very stable......

I think this OS has a fair bit of life in it yet and so upgrading is not a priority for me.....

Also, the upgrade to XP will almost definately be problematic (Hell...they always are ).

If it aint broke...dont fix it

I don't intend to upgrade this computer that I am using right now. Win2k has been the best OS that I have ever used so far. The only reason why I will get WinXP is because I'm going to purchase a labtop, but I think I'll wait for VS.NET to be released to the public first. I'm thinking of getting a pocket pc running Windows CE.NET as well. It would be great if I could use VS.NET to write programs for both devices.

well thought i'd fixed it but was wrong. Had just made it better.

problems all sorted out now. Win xp is behaving itself beautifully thanks to a pci USB card. Winxp, usb, and via chipsets that derive from kt133 do not go well together for some reason. Latest drivers and bioses did little to help. spent 30 quid on a usb card and most problems sorted out. Only problem left is gonna be doing something about the 1 min shutdown time. This seems to have something to do with a nvidia driver service so maybe the next set of detonators will sort that.
