So what do you think about this system?
Is it worth installing next to XP?

freebsd, openbsd, netbsd are true unix operating systems.
they are primarily used for server systems, with a sad lack of hardware support for most desktop boxes, even when compared to linux.

    stable, yes.
    very secure, yes
but unless you are developing for unix servers, not much use as a second os for a dual boot system.

the bsd operating system has very little support for mulitmedia devices, like sound cards.
roughly half as many as linux has, which has only 80% that windows has.

if you do want to go open source for a second desktop os, then I would recommend going with linux, for the better hardware support it has. If it's a development testing system, then go with the bsd.
