Thumbs up Spam and postcounts discussion

hey, kermi3, i would have to agree with what you are saying about the spam and postcounts, because the main purpose i use the board for is to test my knowledge of programming by helping other people with problems and questions, and also for posting questions and problems i'm having in order to get some quality advice.

Now when i look at a person that replies and they have a high posting count then they would normally (without giving it much though) seem to be the most advanced programmers on here, with the most knowledge for solving problems (at least hopefully) but since they can have the posts to the general board and all the spam-type of postings count to raise their title, then in reality they aren't always the most knowledgable and half the time they could be less knowledgable than the person that needs help, so using the information someone supplies in a reply half the time proves a waste of time.

Not to mention, i would like a flashy title in this thing, but not all of us have the time to post 50 googleplexes of spam posts just to get a new flashy title, so i feel deprived (LOL) anyway, yeah just wanted to start a discussion post (since no one else did) and let you know i definately hear your point and feel the same way.

-catch ya later (and if anyone else cares to reply, at least this to me is a somewhat important or valid point to address on the board- so feel free to reply)

    -later ---- zeeee fish
-please do not mess with the incredible radioactive super-fish... thank you.

    I can't beleive we're still discussing this.

The reason that more than 90% of my posts are in GD is that I have found out, with this great site, that programming is not everything in my life, at first, of course, I started posting questions and helping others, but now I understand that you can do much more than programming, and it can fill you more than doing solo programming can, and for that, I thank you all.

    THANK YOU, CPROGRAMMING.COM!

hey doubleanti- it's kewl someone sees my view on this, or cares even, not that i don't believe it's fun to just post stuff discussing things for the heck of it, but i just see eboards for advice, not for trivial things, you know? i mean if you wanna discuss pointless issues or whatever, why not just all get in a chatroom or something or an instant messenger and do it there, not only would it be way faster, but it would be a lot more fun.

And, now that you ask, i actually am an artist of sorts, I am a singer/songwriter/guitarist in a milwaukee punk/emo band, so i guess that classifies (of course i'm sure that's probably not what you meant)

catch ya on the flip side (or whenever, time is irrelevant to me, i'm always buzzed on caffeine and sitting up at night)

The General discussion Board is fun. I think it's important to have it. This is where everything that doesn't belong on the other boards goes. Many people here, like myself, are here to interact with people that have similar interests and learn from them at the same time. It's hard to interact with people in a discussion about code. I mean besides that it's just fun to see some of the personalties here and get to know them outside of a function. We have some really great people here and I have learned a lot just by reading the threads that I don't even participate in.

So yeah I third that DA and Osk............

Thank You CPROGRAMMING.COM and all it's members as well.

One of the big advantages of doing a discussion on a board is that there is no difference in time. I can easily enter a discussion at any time. I can talk to an American, Colombian or a Chinese(if we have a Chinese member) whenever I want. This wouldn’t be possible in a chat program. For instance this post. It was posted 5.47AM. the chances for me being online at this hour are very close to 0.
    So I can only say:
Thank You CPROGRAMMING.COM and all it's members as well.

i agree... it's hard to see someone's personality in code... and i don't think we'd want to have to post code with comments, solely for the comments! [tho it would be twofold, exercising correct, possibly ANSI style commentation, as well as the inclusion of the comment in the comment...]

Unhappy no quite the point i was trying to make...

well, to be honest i guess i should have worded my original message differently, i guess the point i was really trying to make is that i just don't see that the general discussions board should raise your post count (that or only raise it for like every 10 posts to the GD board then)

I just feel that for someone who hasn't been on the boards too long, and just wants a small chunk of help, might find it distracting or unrealiable to go for help, get a person with a high post count helping, but possibly not get some actual good help if say that person doesn't really code items too much, and just sits talking on the eboard about trivial things. (which isn't bad, not in the least, but it does seem kinda wrong to lead people on by having a flashy title because of pointless posts)

I think maybe it would be better if there was some way to just limit the post count being raised on posts that are made in all other boards besides the GD board, that way there is the whole interpersonal communication thing to get to know buddies in there and chat, but not have it reflect trivial things as far as titles go or post counts. That way, if someone is in need of quick help, they could be able to better trust that implementing something that was suggested by a senior member, actually truely will work if they play with the idea long enough.
I myself just would be kinda mad if i trusted that a suggestion would probably work (if it were provided by a senior member) and that i would play with the idea, dabbling trying to work out just a little bug, when in actuality the idea may not work ever, and i may be wasting valuable time, when a better idea that WILL work may be available from someone who is knowledgable, but just doesn't ahve that higher post count.

i know--- kinda long reply here, but i hope i got what i was trying to say right this time. i didn't wanna sound like a party-pooper with saying that we shouldn't discuss petty things, cause i'm all about just babbling about worthless shtuff.

Actually i've raised this issue before. The only problem i can see with it is that people might decide to spam the other (more structured) boards to up their count... From a moderators point of view; Thats rather annoying.
Its a legit thought though. Never thought of it from your perspective before. I completly ignore the post count. Its 100% irrelevant to peoples knowledge.

    >>i am a mod by the way

DA: [j/k] I thought you had to speak English to be a mod [/j/k] (LOL)

bobthefish3: the counters don't mean anything, I think that mine says that I'm a Senior Member, and I almost don't know anything (about C, of course). On the other hand, people like little Osk, who post a lot in the GD forum, DO know a lot about C (among others things).
