Google have a long way to overcome MS
Well if you think about it, they're not really true competitors, so it's hard to tell how the battle is going.

I mean, Google makes money mainly through advertizing. Microsoft makes money by selling products. Certainly they'd benefit if the other's products didn't exist, but I use both. I run Windows, use Gmail. Use MSN Messenger, and Google Talk.

    Yup, a good point.
right now, with Google's name being "The Name" online, Thier software being so highly thought of and Stories that slam MS' reputation like this one, if Google bought out Xandros and changed the logos in the distro, documentation altered to reflect Google they would grab a huge chunk of microsoft's market share.

It is a fantastic timing if MS continues thier battles against Google and they put an os out.

Microsoft may have tough business tactics, but Google are just as bad. I don't feel Microsoft are the bad guys in this scenario.
    Indeed so.

You mean there's an actual dev team behind it? What the hell are they doing, vacationing?

Oooh, I can't wait! I'll learn GPL (the Google Programming Language), and rewrite our companies 2+ million lines of C++/VB/C# codebase to be compatibile with some branded and badged Linux clone. Then, once I've finished reformatting all of our systems, I'll go and tell all of our clients they need to reformat and reinstall GoogleOS. I don't care they they also have billions of lines of Windows only code, because Google are just the best company in the whole wide world and it'll be as easy as clicking "I'm feeling lucky".

If Google plan to grab a "huge chunk" of Microsoft's market share, thats the sort of changes you're looking at. And until Microsoft Office is linux compatibile, Microsoft aren't going anywhere.

What you heard about Google isn't true. They are a publicly listed company. Guess what that means? No, they don't provide services for the betterment of humanity and because they feel like sharing. They're there to make money, grow, and payback their shareholders, just like everyone else. They have been expanding rapidly in the last few years, generating lots of hype starting with their "innovative"* GMail service, and their stock price is enourmously overpriced.

    * GMail became popular because of three things:
    1. 1 gigabyte of bandwidth - no other web mail providers had this much space. But when you think about it, adding some extra space isn't exactly a vast technical challenge. Anyone else could have done this easily.
    2. Its got a fast web interface. How is this accomplished? Using XHttpRequest, which was developed as part of INTERNET EXPLORER (you know, by the EVIL EMPIRE FROM HELL known as Microsoft).
    3. Because of it's "invitation" feature. Throwing a party but your house is too small for everyone to come at once? Make it invitation only. It's a great way to deviver a gig of space when your servers have no where near that much space. It also makes you think "I'm so cool, I was invited to GMail and you weren't!" or, "I'm not using GMail, but all my friends have been invited, and so I really want to go".
So, GMail isn't a technically better product, it was just MARKETTED WELL. But do Google have an evil empire dominated only by sleazy marketting to make up for their bad products, the way everyone thinks "Micro$oft" do? No way, because they're google.

They could show child porn on their home page and you'd still think the sun shines from their "I'm feeling lucky" button.

Microsoft are more worried about a slow upgrade to Vista because people are happy to stick with XP, than they are about a Google or Linux.

Oh, and lets not forget this - the SPAWN OF SATAN himself, Bill Gates:
Has given away over $28BILLION to charity

And their page on the founders of Google:
As of October 2004, Page and co-founder Sergey Brin are estimated to be worth $7 billion apiece.

The two of them own a lot more stock in Google, and I expect they donate a much lower portion of their money to charity.

Boo, I think GMail's got a lot more going for it than hotmail. The ability to search my email has been one of the most useful things I've gotten out of it by far. Not only can you search, but it's easy to search, it's fast, and you almost always find exactly what you want.

Even though it may have been marketted well, that's no reason to denounce the nice features they implemented.

And they were the first (if not, someone else did some really crappy marketing) to offer that kind of space free.

That's because they don't have as much money

Gmail is great ...I don't really care about microsoft or google
but just put side by side a gmail account and a hotmail account and the differences are far from obvious. Even if google offered a 10mb email I would still prefer it from microsofts...and don't forget for non US users hotmail is still 2MB...:S
Also msn messenger is awfull even the macintosh version 5.0 it may be simple and light but when you have to type 10 times the same thing so as the msg to be send....;( (evil look)
