Also started with '98 and moved to XP...I hate the "Modern" style so my desktop looks pretty similar to a 98, but the Blue Screen of Death used to be a daily occurence so I consider XP a decent improvement.Originally Posted by JaWiB

I use 2k (sometimes), but never upgraded to XP because although it did provide more features, none of them were anything close to what I was looking for. 2k was already a strong OS (IMO) and XP really didn't have much to offer.
just so you don't think I'm speaking w/o experience: my father's system (the one I used to use all the time) has Windows XP on it. we upgraded to that from Windows 95. I got a system with Windows 2k installed on it and eventually started liking it much better than any other (Windows) OS. Now both computers are still up and running, but mine has Gentoo running on it more often than not.
» Well.....Windows Vista isn't coming out until sometime next year, so i guess we'll have to wait.
the Beta's already being handed out to some MSDN members.

True, and if I were more of a power user (or had a job), I would probably upgrade to 2K/XP for the few improvements (newer programs, better .NET support, and fewer BSODs). However, windows 98 serves my needs for now, but I wouldn't put it on a new computer Simply, from my experience using XP on computers like mine, XP is too slow. Also, I hate that default GUIof course... you're comparing apples to oranges there... 95/98 and 2k/XP have completely different kernels.
EDIT: I still think there aren't enough changes in the current version of Vista to warrent an upgrade. Once Monad, the new file system, and such gets added in I might change my mind (like I just did with my idea about 98, only I didn't really think my 98 post out).

I own a copy of ME - Its not very nice. My friend figured I should grab a copy of XP - thought maybe I would get a break on Vista as an upgrade from XP. I don't know if Microsoft will do that, and really its not an issue, because I won't be buying a copy most likely.
you can't judge microsoft's OS's by ME...

Oh I know - I just like telling people what a piece of poo that it is. Seriously though, it almost seems like ME was just a rush job, - sort of like 98 with some XP features, just so they could say they put something new out. Now I am _not_ saying that was the case - I am merely speculating.Originally Posted by major_small
edit:: btw major_small, you got some sort of a copyright on your sig software, or could I turn it into C and port it to my machine? lol
if you mean the function: nope... it's fully portable C++ code, that can very easily be turned into pretty much any language and be used on any archetecture... by all means, give it a shot
if you mean the colors: I can give you the code if you'd like... PM me and I'll give you the PHP, and C/C++ version laying around somewhere... but getting to it would take a while... although it does have ALOT more colors in it (0xFFFFFF colors to be exact )

I think that having ME doesn't qaulify you for an upgrade. You have to have 2000 or something. I used to have an ME computer, but I wanted an upgrade to XP for various reasons. My dad was just going to buy me it until he realised how much it cost. I ended getting a new, top of the line computer out of it Since I made it myself I had to buy XP anyways though. I don't understand what's in it for Microsoft to sell their product for over 100 dollars less just for adding a 3 dollar mouse
I don't get what you're saying...I don't understand what's in it for Microsoft to sell their product for over 100 dollars less just for adding a 3 dollar mouse
Wouldn't surprise me. This is kind of what I'm thinking Vista will end up being. A year or so after they release Vista MS will come out and say they'll have a new OS with tons of new features, most of which they just didn't put into Vista. Of course I'm probably wrong but still :PSeriously though, it almost seems like ME was just a rush job, - sort of like 98 with some XP features, just so they could say they put something new out. Now I am _not_ saying that was the case - I am merely speculating.

I'm talking about oem. I think on newegg you have to buy a motherboard but I saw one for like 30 bucks. On some sites though all you have to do is add a mouse.I don't get what you're saying...
Was this the one that was supposed to be 3D, meaning you can push windows back and forth, and turn them....Longhorn I think is what they called it a while back, or maybe that was the name for the 64 bit OS, I can't remember.
Yes this one was ment to be the 3D one "Longhorn" is the code name for windows vista, Microsoft have decided to cut out the 3D section of it to get it out on time, so basically they have cut out all the good features so they can ........ing get it out on time. I rather wait and let them finish it properly with all the good features otherwise its going to be like every ........ing MS OS bugs bugs bugs exploits exploits exploits.
xp took you 40 minute to install?
i only took like 20 minutes for me.
err back when i used it, anyways
my current operating system is nice,
there alot i like about it, a few things
i dont.
