    Programming PDA's

    Hey all, I've been looking at getting a PDA lately, and although the Palm Tungsten E2 seems quite attractive in terms of price, ease of use and functionality, I also would very much like to be able to develop my own applications for the PDA. Seeing as how I have some experience with Windows development and none at all with Palm OS, I can't help but wonder if I should consider an iPaq or something, which uses a mobile version of Windows - although, as I've read briefly somewhere, Palm OS is supposed to be much simpler, which is good, but makes me wary that it may lack power and flexibility. Can anyone comment on this please?

    Palm app functionality is limited. Do yourself a favor and get an iPAQ and download eMbedded tools from MS. The last time I checked, it was still free. It's a full blown IDE for C++ and VB apps in the Windows CE development environment. The languages themselves are trimmed down a bit, but gives you basic functionality. I built a VB app that was used for electric substation inspection and used the PPC version of MSSQL server as a backend. It was pretty slick. And that was 2 years ago, the PPCs have only gotten faster and better.

    I've been doing some iPaq development with the pocket pc in the past few weeks, it's really simple once you get everything set up. There are also OpenGL drivers for the Pocket PC too. If you have any questions about setting it up, feel free to message me.

    I see. Well, seeing as how the only iPaq (or other PPC) available for purchase locally, other than those double the price of the Palm, is the RZ1710 which got terrible ratings everywhere I saw, I'm thinking of getting the lowest-end Dell Axim X30. Do you guys recommend any other particular PPC within the same price range?

    *P.S. It's $270 CAD at the moment, but the 10% sale ends at 10:00 EST today.

    The Dell models are good. That's what we used at my former company and they were solid. And I'd recommend any iPAQ (hell, get a lower-end model... they still run fast).

    Alright, well I think I'm going with the Axim, since its entry-level model is the same price (cheaper, with a discount I get) as the iPaq and has better specs (50% higher CPU speed, and made by Intel instead of the iPaq's Samsung, and more solid looking). Thanks guys!
