    Squeak from car.

A couple of days ago, I was out in my car and it started making a squeaking noise. It had not done this before. The squeak appears to be coming from the front passenger side wheel.

The squeak is high pitched, and proportional to road speed, not engine speed. It is present on about 66% of trips.

Sometimes if it has not squeaked on part of a journey, it will start if I have stopped at lights or whatever. Similaly, if it has been squeaking and I need to stop, it may not begin again when I start driving again.

The squeak has a "tremelo" effect in fact, if you have been to warmer lands, it sounds like crickets/cicadas. The tremelo frequency is also dependent on road speed.

Most time, it is only when I am driving straight, if I turn the wheel it diminishes and often dissappears, starting again when I straighten up.

It always disappears instantly if I touch the brakes, and starts again when I take my foot off the pedal.

My first thoughs were wheel bearings or something, but that doesn't really fit all the symptoms.

Any idea what that may be?

It's weird that the noise goes away when you touch the brakes. Usually it seems like it's the other way around.

I've had that before... I dont' remember what it was, but IIRC it did have something to do with the brakes... I think they needed to be readjusted... but that was a long time ago and I don't really remember very clearly...

worn break pads combined with bad rotor, take it in ASAP unless you think you can do your breaks and rotors by yourself... breaks are important when it comes to high velocity transportation devices
    Hmm

    Worn Bearings?

Could be as simple as a rock stuck in your calliper (i have bad spelling too?) or pads that arent worn evenly. Take it in for a looksie.

If youknow how to change the brakes thats good,
but you can get the rotors fixed at like autozone
    for 5 bucks each.

yeah i thought it sounds like a pebble stuck between caliper and disc. maybe bearings, could also be broken gaiter over the cv joint causing loss of lube and hence wear
Free the weed!! Class B to class C is not good enough!!

I had a similar phenomenon recently. Same story, passenger rear, however the sound was fainting the faster I drove. I brought the car to my local favorite garage. The mechanic listened to it, looked at it, and explained to me very slowly that the glumberish had biberagged the cobblemud. As far as I am concerned, my car suffered from little yellow elephants. Anyway, he fixed it. He told me how, he told me why, he told me what parts he needed. I never understood it in the first place and managed to forget the rest the second I left there.
Sorry, not very helpful I'm into software, I don't understand hardware... especially not if it's dirty and needs oil.

If you have a new car, the mechanic will probably ask for 100 bucks just attaching his laptop and resetting the squeaky bit.

When in doubt, read the FAQ.

    >>> Hey... let's all assume EVERYONE is in the US!

This is, indeed, the problem. In Denmark, nothing costs 5 bucks.

The running rates for a garage labour are about 500 Kroner an hour which XE tells me is $80.65. That will always be the minimum charge. Parts here are also disproportionately expensive, and disposal of the old parts is subject to "Green Tax" which also costs a lot.

I used to be pretty good with cars and engines, but these days they are so damn complicated, you cannot fix them yourself without special tools which cost a fortune.
