House a mentally retarded person and you get 60k a year from the government. Then be a freelance programmer and find whatever you want to add more money. You could also work on a mod team, even if your not getting paid it will be nice to add to your portfolio.

@OP: yes, i have the flexibilty to work from home whenever i want. Though sometimes you just need to be in the office so you can talk with people and what not.
Working from home is highly depenant on the company though, not all companies will allow it.
A lot of companies won't do it because they need to have you in meetings/would rather have you around to talk to face to face. Plus, if you're in my situation, you're also involved in hardware troubleshooting from time to time (LIKE KEEPING 20 YEAR OLD S**T RUNNING!)
It is eminently possible, but the reasons above have to be considered as well. You will need to attend meetings, and if you are working on specialist equipment it might not be possible or economic to have it in the house.
There are also security issues. Some companies don't like their software being developed in an environment they do not have physical control over. There are backup issues. etc. etc.
That said, when developing a bog standard Windows App, I have worked at home from time to time if the weather/transport situation made it attractive.
I find that at home, either I, or my wife can always find something better for me to be doing then coding or whatever.

Thats true. "Home" is a huge waste of time. Personal phone calls, getting something from the fridge, zapping tv channels for 5 minutes while it compiles... won't happen at work.I find that at home, either I, or my wife can always find something better for me to be doing then coding or whatever.
Home is also lacking the features you need for work, database access, source control access, people you can scream at if something goes wrongEven you have all of this, chances are, your connection is not what you would like to work with.

All of the above points are good ones to consider, my situation just happens to fit those well so working at home isnt a problem.
Security: I develop publicly available open source code. There's no securtiy risk to me working at home because people can just go to <hiding my place of work for personal reasons>.com to get it.
Meetings: I have a meeting once a week that i usually make sure im in the office for, but the team i'm on has members all over north america, i can phone in to the meeting just like everyone else and its no big deal
Resources: DB's, source control, and other stuff is either available to me over the web or a through an ssh session.
Wasting time: This is very true, Its why i usually go into the office anyway. That and the office is a 4 minute walk from my condo
Typically at my work they allow you to work from home approximately one day a week. Everyone tries really hard to find one day to keep meeting free so they can work at home that day. I usually get a lot more work done at home, no phone calls, no random assignments, etc, but yeah, its tough to not turn work off a moment and start playing games
