It can't be that expensive... some of my more experienced counter-parts in the Volvo Sweden plant make less than me, and I've only been out of school for 2 years.

The basic rate of income tax here starts at 43%. Professionals can expect to pay a lot more then that. Denmark has some of the highest taxation in the world. Normally, either income or spending is taxed. We have very high income tax AND the highest sales taxes/VAT in the EU, 25% on everything.
And yes, things really are ridiculously expensive here. Not always because they are expensive per-se, indeed, it is frequently quoted that Denmark has the cheapest cars in the EU, but that does not include tax. The manufacturers have to sell them cheap to offset the 225% car sales tax, plus registration tax, plus twice a year "weight tax" plus petrol tax plus environmental tax and some of the highest road tolls/km in the world.

Sweden also have quite high taxes. That is because the governemnt fund healthcare and things like that. But I must admit that the system is very slow and inefficient, and alot of money gets wasted on nothing because of this.
