can you help me out with some chord progressions? something like the 8/12 bar blues of jazz... i've seen a 32 bar ABAA thing that i have trouble with... just because i don't have any resources on it or any listening material... any suggestions of fundamental jazz guitarists? or links? thanks!

depends on how true jazz you want to go.
I'm listening to Wes Montgomery right now. But Eric Johnson has definitely got a jazz style in some of his songs. (like manhattan and east wes)
I've got some material I can scan in and post but it's at home and I'm currently not. I'd start at www.olga.net and move from there.
I've got the sheet music from ah via musicom.
hmm... something quick and easy... a progression i can use to get a feel for... i do have a bit of jazz knowledge... but i'd like something like a 12 bar, y'know? it's really hard to explain since you can't hear my playing... also some listening material would be great... something with a good example of chord progressions or shifting tonics... etc... i'll check out olga for jazz, which is something, for some reason, i've never done...

I bought my dad a solo jazz guitar book a while back that I'll try and look for. Songs like Satin doll and Greensleeves
for listening- Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Johnny Smith should get you started. A lot of Chet Atkins' songs are pretty jazz oriented as well, like Walk Don't Run, The Entertainer, and Mr. Sandman.
hm about that... if jazz is nothing more than chromatics, fifth root transposition, chromatic transposition, and more worldly chords in strange forms [7/9/13/augmented/dimished] and modal playing... [god thank the super tonic mode...]... then i'll be a jazz virtuoso...maybe it just doesn't sound as far out since i'm the one behind the fretboard...

As far as I've studied jazz guitar, the basic concept is come up with a single note melody and then add chords ontop of the melody. Jazz players are probably the most well versed in music theory.
I'm more of a fingerstyle player so I tend to use only parts of the chords (and I detune which makes it a bit more difficult) but it's still good stuff to practice. You really get to know your way around the neck. And it makes improvising easier. Plus it helps when you detune because you start thinking in intervals.
I thought 1 of the rules for jazz is that your not allowed to play the same note twice LOL
I play a bit of guitar myself but have nowhere near enough time to practise much, mostly just play my accoustic.

hehe, same note twice, that sums up what my vision of a jazz virtuoso does! but they do it with grace somehow...
i like that comercial where they have two people playing jazz piano over the telephone... that's a good example of the stuff i might like to do... actually i know the fretboard quite well, but i still need a stronger progression basis for jazz improvising... i can still anticipate 12 bar with jazz chords, so what else is there? thanks...
