    increased net speed

hey guys, i am having some trouble understanding this...what the actual thing is that i have a low speed connection..its something like 40kbps...thats kilobits. so usually, the speed of the downloads goes up to something like 5KBps. but since today afternoon, i am getting a speed of something like 30KBps, from my isp, and i really dont know what the problem is. i want to know from you guys if something of this sort has happened to anyone here. Another question is whether i should tell this to my isp, or enjoy while it lasts and let them figure it out for themselves? Btw, another friend of mine in who has a connection from the same ISP is experiencing the same increase in speed..please tell me what i should do.

They could have upgraded their hardware... some ISPs around here offer a speed boost for about $3 more per month. Maybe you're getting that for free.

Maybe they lowered the price of a higher plan to the same price that you were paying and now you get that plan.

Computer glitch, definitely. Someone ought to be fired.

    >>please tell me what i should do.
Call them up and DEMAND that they give you what you're paying for. It's simply not fair of them to switch you to something other than you wanted.

I think Comcast did that to me a few weeks ago. I'm not complaining that I'm getting about 200K/s faster than I had been.

Marketting ploy? They bump your speed up without mentioning it, leave it like that for a while until you've got used to it, then drop it back to what you shouuld have and at the same time make some kind of special offer for upgrading?

That would be really mean, and I could totally see Comcast doing it.

I'm not sure I'd notice it that much anyways - I hardly play any games online, and most of the time the sites go a lot slower than my connection speed can handle. The only time I really notice it is when I'm downloading large files via direct link (as opposed to BT or whatever), and I don't do that all that often.

On a cable connection and good BT download, the highest I've gotten is around 350 kB/s.

I'm on a university network. What does that mean? It means we are all attached to a monster fiber optics line. On a heavy usage day the download speeds "dwindle" to 200KB/sec (on good servers, a'course). When people are at class, and you find a good server, I can get transfer rates of 1MB/sec (~8Mbps). Yes it is sexy.

Currently I'm in the Netherlands and here they have cable modem and speed is about 250 KB/s (kilobytes per second).

P.S. Greetings from the Netherlands, really great country!
Gotta love the "please fix this for me, but I'm not going to tell you which functions we're allowed to use" posts.

that ought to be sexy..i can only imagine such speeds as i dont think that such fast stuff is going to be available in this part of the world in the coming few years atleast.. btw, how much do you pay for the connection?? are there any download limits as such?

I have a downstream bandwidth of 512k which usually gives me a download rate of 50K/s. That costs uhh around £22/month with no limit. The highest I can get in my area is 2MB which is like £~35 or something for unlimited downloads.
