    UML Software

what UML software do you guys use, preferably free or opensource?

At school I use RationalRose, and it's great, but rather expensive; I want something nice and free for home use...I've recently downloaded argoUML, it is comepletely java based, and rather slow, also it doesn't have all the features I'm looking for.

    Any suggestions?

For school i used an app called VisualUML.. but only the demo was free and it plastered your final images with "DEMO" over top of the diagram. I ended strategically laying out the entities so the plastered label didnt cover them, then photoshoping it out

anywho, that probably didnt help a whole lot. Now i use "dia" (a F/OSS app) but its strictly for drawing, it cant build models from code or generate code from models.

Visual UML and Rational Rose are kind of expensive. I use DOME. The interface doesn't use tabs and the UML version it supports is fairly old, but it's fairly stable and fast compared to the others. Along with this program, I print pictures of my diagrams out and then paste them into a word document with table of contents.

I've considered this many times, but never used it "for real"

If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

yes! if you ever want a job as a software engineer you'll need to know how to at least read UML diagrams.

    axon, try DOME http://www.htc.honeywell.com/dome/
I've had a lot of problems both using arguml and poseidon. They crash too often and are too slow. DOME, however, is faster and more stable and if you save your documents into a word document you can get by the clunky DOME smalltalk interface. Also, while it's not obvious from the GUI, you can turn an association into a composition and aggregation relationship and change the navigable end. To do this you right click on the multiplicity.

if you would read the entire post, you would find out I am looking for free software....but with that said, I do have Visio available to me for free from school, and actually have used it for this project

Ah man--this is what I get for joking around. What's sad is people didn't think it was a joke even when I made sure it would look like a joke--> I put a smiley.

Putting a smiley doesn't make it a joke.
It just makes you look like an AoL'r
