I've been cruising along tigerdirect.com and the only difference I found between the two were the cache size. Well, the semptron is the newer one of them why is it slower? Or did I just get confused?

The Semperon is their budget chip, similar to the Celeron for Intell processors.

There are 2 sorts of sempron, one is a rebadged Athlon XP with some minor enhancements, The other is an athlon 64 with the 64bit extensions removed, and a 333MHz bus speed. The poll seems a bit pointless, everyone would prefer an Athlon 64. (if money were no object). The Sempron is a good budget chip though.
If money were no object, you'd get an Athlon FX chip. The Athlon 64s are cheaper than their comparable (and I say so very loosely based on RATED processor speed) Intel chip.

The Sempron (not Semptron, not Semperon) is basically a 166 MHz FSB t-bred Athlon XP.
The performance ratings are comparible to the Celeron, so don't compare a Sempron 2600+ to a Athlon XP 2600+ for example, the Athlon XP will walk all over it.
The Athlon 64 semprons are supposed be pretty good, after all, they get all of the goodies such as on-chip memory controller, hyper transport, etc...
Only problem is they're limited to the otherwise dead socket 754 platform.
Not as dead as socket A I'd say.
So does this mean Socket A is gonna die in near future?
I think if that be the case, and considering that things happened this way; I think Semptron should have never been introduced into the market, because from what I hear that is some slow bus speeds that semptron operates at.

Well the Sempron is the Duron replacement. I beleive AMD are keeping socket 754 on as their budget platform, and socket 939 for mainstream desktop.
Incidentally, I just bought a Sempron 3100+ (Socket 754 , 1.8GHz) for a freind who's on a budget. I didn't fancy the Socket A Semprons, since as others have pointed out, it's just a rebadged athlon XP, but with a higher price tag. So maybe AMD are getting a little cynical now they have a market share - playing intel at their own game.
The Bus Speed isn't too slow, O.K. 333Mhz vs 400MHz for the Athlon branded chips. I reckon it's more a means to separate their budget offerings from the mainstream stuff. In practice I doubt that it makes much difference to performance in real world applications, maybe a few percent.
In any case, you have a good choice of CPU's these days. When you compare the AMD offerings with intel, you have to say they look pretty good. (especially if you're spending your own cash).
