Let's see how this works out

I am playing around with a 3d chat program. I didn't write it, but the source is freely distributed... so it may be a neat project to make it even better than it already is...

Some of you may have already seen it.

Create a login here and check it out.

I will probably be on for a while testing as the Admin. Drop by if you like.

this isn't a project, really. It is an already working 3d chat room that kicked oskillian out three times unfortunately. I guess it is a little buggy.

I was just checking it out and welcoming you guys to use it for live chat if you like.

It supports avatars in a 3D environment.

The developer isn't working on it any more, which is quite unfortunate, but he gave up the source for those that wish to work on it on their own.

I don't know enough yet to do it, but I might play around with it in the future, but for now I am using it for chatting purposes.

I have a feeling that people were being dropped because I was logged in as the Administrator and because of the slow connectivity on their end, but it is still a bug of some sort.

    p.s. Michelle... nice bunny.

I am getting some kind of null pointer exception value... when people log out or close... I think that is part of the bug that is dropping people

I might have it fixed... who knows for sure. Me and gnu-ehacks played around with it for a while with no problems.

I need to find a way to implement furniture as he suggested. That would be funny... but I think the environment is hard coded, and I do not know enough Java.

And can you do me a favor... if you are dropped, let me know in this thread. Thanks.

well, on first tought, a 3D chat seems a good idea, but then I thought that I actually only read the message history box, so it's not a good idea to waste bandwidth sendong position and avatar data while the user is not using these features

people with faster connections don't give a crap....

and you really don't know how much bandwidth that info is taking up anyway. The local client probably can handle a large portion of curent positioning and only send an x,y and direction offset when there is a change. That is small bytes, dude.

Room avatars can also be stored on the client end in an array of current avatars. Then it is only downloaded to you once and positioned via the postional info.

And... most importantly. It is just something to play with... there is no real need to chat with people in these manners anyway. Especially with these low-end chat clients like IRC, AIM, etc.

Thats a nice program. If you decide to keep it running, I think I'll become a more frequent visitor. Also, I had no problems logging in.

I shut it down last night. I am really concerned about security. If there is enough interest, I may move it to a comercial server that allows SSI.

I will leave it up for now. Quite a few people came today, only most at different times.

Interesting program, I think it needs a few more features though. It's pretty kewl, because it's 3d. Although, you really only have 2 dimensions. Just make it so that you can fly in the air, and it'll be really cool! =)
What will people say if they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
What will people do if they find that it's true?
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak, there is no disguising the truth!

Yes flying would be good... and so would furniture. (as you stated while you were there) The room is hardcoded. I might see about being able to change room color... but at my present learning level, the scope of work is too large... even if the source is open.
