    Free chess openings resources

I am looking for some good webistes on the net that have classic chess openings explained in a simple manner that clearly explains the advantage and likeliness of every particular opening. I have noticed many of these sites only refer to books which are for sale, but I am looking for a free site that has this kind of information.

I would like to make a list of different openings, and organize them into groups and then learn them by heart. For example, I want a group with those openings that begin with Pe4 (white), Pe5(black), Nf3 (white) and so on.....

I want to learn perhaps 100 variations so I can always feel sure I have a good variation in the back of my head to apply at least during the first turns of the game.

    Any good suggestions?

if you are really interested in this, get a book called Nunn's chess openings by John Nunn..its a wonderful with all the openings properly explained and with all the variations given..

edit: if you want to find sites, search google for particular openings like the dutch defense or the sicillian.. you will find sites dedicated to particular openings..

I've never actually thought about this, but I'm sure many of you play chess....maybe we could get together and have a small tourney on yahoo or something. Just to find out, who would be interested with something like that?

Is anyone else here rated with the USCF?

I'd be interested, if it were announced far enough in advance. Just so I could be sure to make time for it.

I'd be interested in a tourney too. I'll see what I can find for you.

ok, well I'll set something up in probably two weeks....I'll start an official thread in a few days. In the meantime, those interested and without a yahoo acount, go get one

Also, we have to decide on timer rules...I see this as one of two options: either same timer for everyone, ie 5/3 (5 minute games, 3sec increments per move) or if both players agree, they would set their own time with a limit of (10/0)....what do you guys think?

Personally a 5 minute game is the longest I will play - two reasons, I like to play fast and longer games give the other player a chance to cheat.

    I prefer fast games too.

Now to get a Yahoo account x-x Wouldn't it be much easier if we used one of those free Java-based real-time chessboxes? I know Jagex had them.

Wow, I've never played chess nearly that fast. The fastest I've played is like 30 seconds a move.

I dont like yahoo much, mainly because its so slow. When i used to play i played on this site called playsite www.playsite.com . If you dont like playing from your browser you can use gamespy, www.gamespyarcade.com , the software is free and supports a lot of mp games and board games. you can also use a mic if you have one to talk to your opponent or the other people in the room, its real cool.

Everyone knows that the power is in the Goring Gambit.

*sigh* Its been far too long since I've played chess.

the thing is that most of us already have yahoo id's - I think that would be the best spot to do it at.

it's 3 seconds increments - meaning that if a game is 5/3 - you have 5 minutes to complete the game, and one move can last upto the end's game. If you do make a move, however, 3 seconds are added to your clock. So if you make your first move in a second, your timer will be 5:02 - get it?

I might be interested in an online chess tournament. I haven't played forever and I'm not particularly great at it (probably not as good as a lot of you folk).
