    PalmOS vs Pocket PC

    Debate!

I'm looking to buy a pocket pc/palm in the next day or two and would like to hear what you guys think of the two? I've personally worked only slightly with each one. What are the pros and cons to each and for normal use (word/excel) and possibly development, which is the best one?

I have used them both for profesional reasons and I have to tell you that I prefer the PocketPC. Palm was nice however the interface takes some getting use to and even though sinking with the PC has improved there are still some problems with transitioning between Palm and PC.

I am currently using my PocketPC because of many reasons:

Native sinking with Outlook: I cannot tell you how many times this has saved my butt with project deadlines and ensuring I read all the email addressed to me.

Office interface: Although development on the PocketPC is limited it is still extremely helpful to whip up an excel app that I can track deficiencies on my PocketPC. Later I sync it on my computer and directly import the whole thing into a Jet database.

Standard Windows Feel: I don't know about anyone else but just the standard windows interface allowed me to access all the stuff on my PocketPC faster than I did with my Palm. I was always stumbling around looking for stuff with that.

The games are a lot cooler: Whenever you need to kill time on the go I always enjoy playing one of the cool arcade games. Palm does have games but my feel was they just weren't as neat.

It was alot easier for me to implement WiFi and search the web using my PocketPC than it was my Palm. Maybe due to the fact of a similar network setup to windows and IE installed.

Well, that is about all the ranting I will do for now. Go with the PocketPC. You will be happy.

Although development on the PocketPC is limited
One of my friends owned a PocketPC a few years ago and he could program on it using "Pocket C" or something like that. That language was built in to the pocket pc, but I'm mainly wondering if I'll be able to develop for the Pocket PC using my computer and then flash the programs on to it? I'm assuming this is possible.

That's the Pocket PC I'm looking at getting.

    The full quote would be:
Office interface: Although development on the PocketPC is limited
What I mean is that the PocketPC Office doesn't retain all the functionality for development.

I have used PocketC before, pretty cool. I know MS has a plugin for VC that will compile for WindowsCE. I believe that would be the name of the OS that runs on PocketPCs.

Ah, ok, sorry about that misquote. But that's cool then, it'll be interesting to develop on a system that's not a computer for a change.

I dislike pocketPC, its just not compatable with anything except the MS stuff (surprise surprise). PalmOS has way more flexibility, my personal favorite is the sony models which run PalmOS with the Clie launcher shell. its great.

also, PalmOS is usable with linux.. pocketPC is not. PalmOS devices can also run linux.

yay for PalmOS!!! PocketPC will handcuff you to even MORE MS crap.

(also, the games i have on PalmOS are pretty cool... even a 3D racing game among all the standard puzzle types)
