Just read this article about Macrovision's new "RipGuard" technology that simply causes DVD-ripping software to crash before it can finish. It doesn't require a new DVD format or player, so I was just wondering how it might work. Any ideas?

It will work until programs are upgraded to fight it. Personally i think its wrong to prevent people from creating backups of the movies they paid for, but i see why they are doing it.
Macrovision are simply trying to stay in business, and MPAA members are their best customers. Personally I've never understood why they continue to license mechanisms that have already been broken, but Macrovision probably draw up 5-10 year contracts to insure their income.
I imagine the next generation of digital video media will have proper DRM built into it. Ho hum.

I used to think this was a lame excuse to pirate, until last fall when my cds were stolen and the only reason I had the music was because the first thing I do after purchasing a CD is rip it.
It's still normally used as an excuse to pirate, though.

I've lost countless CDs which would have cost me lots of money but I always try to copy my game cds to backups so I don't wear them out, or if I lose them its not like I have to buy the game again. Nothing is more irritating then losing a game to scratches on the cd.
So the solution really lies in doing something like Disney does whereas if you register the DVD you bought it has a lifetime warrantee. That way if the DVD is lost or worn/broken you drop them a line and get a new one.

Somehow I doubt that will catch on. I have very little faith in the companies that run with the MPAA or the RIAA. But thats my own opinion. That would be nice however...
