looks like I'm using google maps from here on in... finally a map where you can copy and paste an entire address string
maps from New York, NY to Portland, Oregon (approximation from my own tests):
google: 9.5 seconds, 2988 mi
mapquest: 3.5 seconds, 2897.22 miles
mapblast: 4.5 seconds, 2896.7 Miles
I definately like the way you can move around google's maps better, and it's generally faster than the way you move around mapquest or mapblast's maps. I think that may be the reasoning behind the slower loading times. google may be loading the entire map, whereas mapblast and mapquest only load a portion, and if you want to see some area in detail (which I usually do), you have to wait for it to reload a new piece of the map.
apparently, north america is the only continent on the planet (zoom out all the way, grab the map, and move it up to see what I'm talking about)
edit: this seems to need more work... it can't even find drewville road, a fairly long road in carmel, NY. type in "carmel, NY", zoom in one level and move straight down until you see it (it's highlighted in yellow).

Well it is still Beta. Can't wait until they add Australia, it's way better than www.whereis.comedit: this seems to need more work... it can't even find drewville road, a fairly long road in carmel, NY. type in "carmel, NY", zoom in one level and move straight down until you see it (it's highlighted in yellow).
I know that it's still beta, along with just about everything else google is doing right now... they're probably always going to follow the search engine's method of becoming production-level: it'll stay beta until people forget it's beta, then they'll quietly remove the 'beta' label...Originally Posted by stovellp

Too bad europe isn't available yet. I'd like to see how it handles Norwegian cities.

As with everything Google lately, it doesn't work in Opera.
Looks like it has potential to rival multimap when it grows to include the rest of world. No UK version yet
I find that quite surprising - what kind of issues do you get with opera? As with everything Google lately, it doesn't work in Opera.

I'm using beta 8 Opera, and it doesn't even load the maps.
Your browser is not supported by Google Maps just yet. We currently support the following browsers:
IE 5.5+ (download: Windows)
Firefox 0.8+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
Netscape 7.1+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
Mozilla 1.4+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
We are working on supporting Safari. Regardless of your browser type, you must have JavaScript enabled to use Google Maps.
We recommend you download one of the browsers above, or you can try to load Google Maps in your current browser.

What browser are you using Cheez? I didn't get that with Opera 8 Beta.
How funny, that's exactly what I was going to say. Mapquest used to let you view satellite pictures of the map you're looking at and also see a large map image, now it's for the birds. Can't wait to see what else google can do.Originally Posted by axon
