I just got back from the recruiter (I called him and had him pick me up instead of waiting)

Darkness, I really know how you feel (seriously), but you should think about it long and hard before you make any definitive decission. Take your time, what year are you?

I'm a freshman in college. I spoke with a recruiter over the summer before school started but decided not to go. I haven't stopped thinking about it all year.

I wish you luck. Just make sure you are gonna be 18 by the time you get to MP school. I worked with a guy that was suppose to be an MP but he was 17 when he hit MP school so they gave him a new MOS.

Turning 19 in a couple of weeks.

The key to talking with the recruiter is to realize a couple points: They need you and they don't need you. Recruiters work off of a quota system so they won't waste a lot of time with someone who is baiting them.

Yeah, and I know the bs scams they pull, idealizing things, making things sound just right. I kept on asking persistent questiosn and he eventually said "look, kid, we're trained with marketing skills like a business manager. all else aside, it'll be the hardest thing you ever do, but it will be the best thing you ever do"

Tip for bootcamp: You amount of preperation will prepare you. When you are there realize its just a giant mind game.

they are, they try to get buddy buddy with you and all of that crap. they don't care, and it IS a scam, but I realize this and still want it for other reasons

friggin a this is the hardest decision i've ever had to make (i haven't enlisted yet, but once i do i belong to the military).

From what I hear from people I know in the marines is that boot camp isn't terribly hard excluding the ten mile run. I'm 15 and have already considered the military. Remember the mind game things. Even if you can't be fully prepared for boot camp why not try and make it easier on yourself?

Become something cool like a sniper.

Another tip: Everyone has a boss. While you are still a civilian you can use this to our advantage. If you don't get something you like you can always go higher (or to another recruiting office)

What do you mean by this?

I'm pretty sure he means ask a high authority, get a higher rank, or ask another recruiting office if you were stuck with something you don't want to be.

I've hung out with a couple of marines in my time, good partiers. The chicks are decent too, although hands down I am afraid the AirForce has the hottest.

Anyway, if you are in college and not running out of money wait until you get a degree to join. You'll most likely like life as an officer much better, and the pay is a lot more.

Additionally, look around at the other forces. I know the AirForce right now has a computer field they opened up that seems to be doing pretty well for itself. The navy as well has totally reshaped there IT sector.

Remember, stay in college. You are talking to the wrong recruiter if you are talking about going in enlisted. Find the officer recruiter or ask your recruiter to point you to him. This is probably a better route to take.

I don't want to be an officer.

I don't care about pay, I strictly want to something hard. To quote myself at the recruiter "I want to put myself into a situation where I'm getting my ass kicked and see how well I fare"

edit: I don't mean I don't care about pay, I just mean that I'm not doing it for the money (which isn't a lot either way).

and I see what you were saying thantos, and I did have a problem already tonight with that. I am leaning towards marine reserve, in which case the only MOS I can actually get is what is available in the unit, which includes:

-infantry
-radio operator
-lav crew maintenance
-cook

MP is more specialized and the unit I would be serving in has no MP openings (or just plain doesn't have a need for MPs).

So, basically, I want an education, I want to be a marine, and I definitely don't want to be an officer, so marine reserve seems like the best way to go.
I am going to go watch 'making marines' and read over the propaganda they left with me. Dont be surprised if I start a thread saying 'i enlisted' and you dont' hear from me again for a few months.

Just to remind you...most marine reserves these days are on active duty. I don't know if you care, but if you're going to be active anyway, why not fully active with the MOS you want

a few months becomes a lot of months, then a year, then a few years, then we hear that you gloriously gave your life to save a stray bullet from a fellow soldier's gun.

See, the funny thing about freedom is that you have all these brave soldiers who lay down there lives so that people like you can make disrespectful statements about their sacrifices.

These soldiers are people, they have mothers and fathers. They have wives and husbands. They have sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. They go months on end without seeing their families to ensure democracy, a free union, prevails. To protect the rights that we have all grown accustom too and to attempt to spread those rights to those less fortunate.

And when a soldier dies in the line of duty, they leave behind those mothers and fathers. They leave widows and children that they will never see grow up. Those children who ask their remaining parent why Daddy or Mommy isn't coming home.

Then we have you, who makes light of their sacrifice. It is NEVER EVER alright to treat a soldier's sacrifice with such candor. Be greatful and reverent of their sacrifice; and when you see a soldier, or family of a soldier - say thankyou.

Sounds like an excellent idea. My military service began in the middle of the winter and no heat in the world can possibly be half as terrible as the cold in the first few weeks I had in the forest.

If i was you, id go with the NSA deal. they offer a full scholarship, you pay nothing, in between courses you do interships. Then at the end of your study you have a degree and a job and since this has to do with the DoD you have to serve for 1-2 years for every year of your schoalarship. So this is also a militay career.

not entirely true - i work at randolph afb. here all IT positions are being transferred over to civilians. the enlisted/officer core is being retrained. if i'm not mistaken, this is happening/going to happen air force wide, and proabably DoD wide.
