Thread: 144KB email virus?

I keep getting this silly 144KB email virus that keeps landing in my junkbox. It has to be a virus because it for one they're all 144KB, I opened one up and it obviously had an attachment because when I replied I'd see something like:
<<multipart1>>
or something like that. And plus they have random names, like the 2 I just got today are titled:
Administrator and
MS Internet Email De...

I'm running Linux, so hopefully the malware isn't taking over my baby computer. Plus I have an Apache webserver, my baby server, and my baby computer :(

Why can't they just leave me alone!!!!! *plugs ears and rocks back and forth*

A 144kb virus :0 well it cant be that good its too big

what file format is the attachment?
anyway, being on linux your a lot safer than a windows user.

I could literally thrash your system, erase your partition information, flash your BIOS, and/or frag your OS in 144 kb of pure assembly code.

Don't load it and don't run it. Just delete it. Size does not matter given that most instructions in assembly are simply opcodes of a few bytes. You can fit a lot in 144 kb. To give you an idea of how powerful assembly is...your computer boots up on 512 bytes of assembly code and then loads other sectors but I would imagine the whole code base is less than 144 KB that boots your system everyday.

I think my fellow assembly language programmers on this board would agree with me that 144KB is a lot of code.

Well when I open the email, there is no attachment image for me to download, and the <<multipart1>> doesn't give it away either. I bet one of my friends has me on their address list on Outlook or something I keep becoming a receiver of their infected computer.

For pure assembly, that is indeed a lot of code. You could do an awful lot with someones computer in that amount of space. The other part to what nvoight said, however, is the virus replicating itself and sending itself through email systems. Still not a huge task, but I think that takes the numbers up somewhat.

I would also advise against even opening the email. Opening the email does give the email's code enough power to let it's creator know you've opened it, and when, etc... (probably used by these big advertizing networks that collect as much information as possible - most of the stuff cleaned out of my PC by adaware is cookie-storage from such organizations) It can also load JavaScript applications, some of which can in various ways force you to restart your computer. I've seen one when it covered 95% of the screen and would move when the mouse got anywhere near the edges - bad if you just wrote a lot of source code and forgot to save.

Anyway... to cut a long story short - stay as far away as possible. It's not enough to simply not download the attachment. And if you must reply (*sigh*) at least give them the phone number from another junk email and tell them it's yours. You have a responsibility to introduce idiots to eachother.
