Thread: Partition Question....

Hey all,

Can someone help me out on this question. If i have 3 partitions, 1 with Win XP, another wih Win 2k and another with no os.

Then i need to know if it is possible for me to install a program onto the partition with no os, and then if it is can it be used from partitions 1 and 2. Basically what im saying if i want a program to be used by both OSs do i need to install it twice onto each partition or can i just have it installed on its own partition for use of both OSs.

It would depend on the program I guess....but what about the stuff that an installer will put in the Win Dir and the changes it makes to the registry..... those changes will effect the installing OS....you might find a way around it....maybe installing twice, but againn it would depend on the program.....

Unfortunately, you do need to install it twice in most cases (especially any that rely on registry settings), but you can install it twice in the same directory most likely, unless there is a rebuild/recompile that involves your present system.

What this effectively does is overwrites the identical files in the same directory and updates the registry to look for the files needed to run the program.

The best thing to do is to give it a shot...

True... and if you are using 95/98/ME on the same machine, you are required to have three primary partitions with partition hiding. If such were the case, then you wouldn't be able to access the apropriate drive, or the drive letters may be different.

Just try it though... it will either work, or it won't.

If you install a program under one partition and that program
makes use of the registry then the program will work only
in the OS under which you installed it. Some programs will work wherever, but they are few.

i'd imagine those programs would be those who's information is more dynamically allocated... [personally all of my data would be organized this way... per program... however a nice central system is a good idea...] about this, you cannot use multiple file systems in a single harddrive right? like, FAT32/FAT16/NTFS... for example... i'd imagine so... partitioning is the secondary to file system... correct?

ooh that's right, reorders thought... hm... partition/filesystem/os... and that's true... what can windows read other than fat16/32? thx.

Thanks for all the help, i have decided just to go with installing it on each partition and set up 3 partitions NTFS, NTFS and fat32 with winxp, win2k and win98. I think that will kill any problems that i could have.

have you done winxp and win98 before. I believe they both install boot on the primary drive which overwrites the MBR. WINNT & WIN2K encompass 98 and will boot it for you.

So to get to the point. You may need to enable partition hiding so that 98 and xp don't see eachother.

You can do that with Partition Magic.
