    13

Why do 13 year old or younger people have to use a different registration form? (that led a friend of mine to a blank page)

that is not only here, there are many places in the net in which you can only register if you're older than 13..

what makes this 13 so special? is it just about the number? or is there something else involved in there?

If you register as under 13 you have to provide the email of your parents/guardians.....

Not sure of any other implications

My guess is it's the legal age for any kind of contract in the US.
I think it's earlier here, but considering you need to be 21 just to drink your beer in peace there, I guess 13 could be it.

Below a certain age (13 there ?) any action you take can be canceled by your legal guardians. You buy a car ? Your dad says no and the contract is canceled. In fact, people who sell you things below that age take the risk. So thats my guess. But maybe someone who actually knows some facts on this matter can enlight us

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
    Then ask a smart question.

I've seen some mature topics here. No doubt if I were a parent I would want to know what my 13 year old child is looking at. Any older and you are in high school, and you are exposed to these things more anyways. I dunno, this is just what I think.

C'mon, a 13 year old kid who is smart enough to come in here is smart enough to sign a contract which actually doesn't involve you critically (accept it, but most contracts in the internet have little or no repercutions if you violate it in a way you're never going to violate). I think that it's dumb to do that.

But, that's my opinion, I'm sure that legislators have a different one.

Hmm...Maybe it's some kind of law made by beaurocrats that have no understanding of the nature of the internet. Hmm....
