I heard that its easier on your computer if you keep it on all the time than to keep shutting it down and restarting it over and over. Anyone heard any thing about that? I just find when i leave my laptop on for a long period of time, it seems to just get slow after awhile.

It's, somewhat true. Indeed the rapid change in voltage and temperature does stress componenets of your computer, most modern PSUs are built tough enough to take the stress, but the temperature change is still present.
Rebooting a computer does not stress any components.

Extreme's are generally bad. If you're not going to be using the computer for a few hours, I put it on Standby/Hibernate. If it's more than say, 6 hours, I shut down. I remember leaving my TRS-80 on for weeks at a time. Everything stayed relatively happy if you didn't push the bright orange button.
Of course it didn't do much...
There is some truth to that statement, but it doesn't provide enough problems to make someone stop doing it. Here's my take on that idea: even if it does wear on your components a little bit, it's not going to be enough to make it fail within the time span that you would expect to use the computer anyways. My current computer is over 3 years old (AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz, 256 DDR all the same as it was the first day I built it) and it runs like a dream. I shut it down almost every nite. I'm due for an upgrade... but only because I want more speed. I don't think I'll ever keep a PC long enough to see performance issues related to shutdowns.
