    Idioms & Proverbs

I have to analyze a really strange poem for my english class ( Symposium by Paul Muldoon ) and basically, it's a whole bunch of idioms and proverbs patched together. If you read it you'll see why it took me a while to pick apart every one.
There's a few though that i don't know the meaning of:

    1. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
    2. A new broom sweeps clean
    3. Empty vessels make the most noise
    4. A hair of the dog that bit you
    5. There's no smoke without fire

Any thoughts as to what these sayings mean?

People in glass houses shouldnt through stones...

Thats if your judging someone or are looking down on them ( throwing stones at them ) and you are doing the samethings or have the same problems.

Some of the others I havent heard... So looking at them out of context would be hard to give they're metaphorical meaning.

I wouldn't quite say thats the meaning.
THe meaning is almost a litteral translation. If you throw a stone in a glass house, what is most likely going to happen? You are going to break the glass (a window, wall, door, whatever) it's going to break and you are going to be in trouble. The meaning is that in a situation you shouldnt do something that has practically a 1/1 chance of getting you in trouble due to the situation.

Steeling from a store, while your parents are watching is throwing a stone in a glass house.
Lieing infront of your pastor is throwing a stone in a glass house.

    Get the picture?

(it should be realized my posts are all in a light hearted manner. And should not be taken offense to.)

    1. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
If you have your own faults, don't judge others based on their faults.
    2. A new broom sweeps clean
This is mainly about starting fresh. A newer broom (a fresh start) will sweep cleaner (give a beter result)
    3. Empty vessels make the most noise

    4. A hair of the dog that bit you
For a dog to bite you, you need to get close enough to get a hair off of it.
    5. There's no smoke without fire
Basically the results (smoke) tend to lead towards a likely cause (fire).

First one reminds me of a movie a saw a long time ago (I don't remember the name).
A couple of missionaries were down in South America. At some point, they decided to have a glass church built and imported by river boat. The guy had the misfortune of dying when he was on the boat, inside the glass church, and the boat sprung a leak.

    Random thought for the day.

"A hair of the dog that bit you "

In Aussie that means if you have a hangover, the cure is to drink some more of the alcohol that gave you the hangover.

    Friedrich Nietzsche

If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Anybody played Monkey Island 3? You had to create a hangover-cure by getting Guybrush to get a dog to bite him and grabbing it's fur.
