    Salary for C++ Programers?

    Hi Again.

    I was wondering what the average salary for C++ programers was in all the different fields (i.e. games, databases, applications, top secret, etc). I'm just doing some research and thought you guys would know more than Monster.com would.

    Thanks a lot.

    It's all across the board. Seriously, depending on ability, experience and the specialization you could make anywhere from nothing at all to six or seven figures. I know people working on startups who are putting money out of their pocket into the business because there's no profit, and I also know someone who is expecting to move from seven figures to eight this coming year.

    But the average starting salary for a C++ programmer (entry level) in just about any specialization would be around $30,000US.

    Thanks a lot. It looks like some comapnys will start an experianced programmer at $75,000 but they have to have had 5 years experiance in the industry.

    $30,000 US? What the hell that's just three times a garbage man's ... I mean sanitary maintenance technical salary. Oh wait, those are profesionals. Now I see.

    You get what the job is actually worth, IMO. People need to face the facts, programming is a scutwork job, and in order to make money you have to be project manager or something along those lines.
    there used to be something here, but not anymore

    I think cops are disgustingly underpaid while we're on the subject. But anyway - if you are talented at programming you can very quickly gain a reputation and start moving towards some of the examples cited by Prelude. But since these days every Tom, Richard (PG-13 board, remember?) and Harry is a programmer, the averages are not that high above poverty line. But I'd just like to echo Prelude in that it covers the whole spectrum. There are people who actually have to put money in to the programming and get nothing in return (at least for the moment), and then there is Bill Gates.

    I guess it's not unlike carpentry. There are tons of folks who can frame houses and make a living at it. Others can do some incredible cabinetry and finish work. Then there are those that have read (and understood) Mowatt's treatise on stairbuilding and handrailing.
    But we all still need to tote lumber.

    Garbage men make good salaries actually. It has to do with the type of work. In order for people to take the job, there has to be some incentive. Money is that incentive. The same idea is true of the people who collect tolls on the highway,
