Domain Name?
I found out that registering a .com domain name for one year at namecheap.com is only $8.88, while registering a .com for one year at register.com is $35.
Why is that different?
Namecheap.com is unreliable or what?
Please give me suggestions coz I am going to register .com domain name.
I register my domain names at GoDaddy.com, .com ones are currently $8.95/year.

Also remember that you don't have to register the domain through your host. Just make sure that whomever registers it puts YOU are the registrant and not themselves and you'll be ok

namecheap.com is a reseller as opposed to register.com, but aside from namecheap's reasonable prices I am impressed by their prompt support.
namesecure.com, a registrar, prices domain names at US$15 per year, but you can get it to $12 per year if you register for 3 years, or even $7.49 per year if you register for 10.

How do they get the domain names to rent you in the first place? Do they just give a big list of "I want to reserve these" domain names to the international bureau of domain-name-deciders and pay a fee for it or something? If they do, what's to stop us from doing the same?

Basically your browser finds stuff buy searching nameservers (servers made just for this purpose) for the domain and it's corresponding location. When you get a domain from a registrar, they will record this in one or more of the biggest nameservers.

Ah. So what's to prevent you from recording yourself in the nameservers yourself? Or is it just that nameservers have an access fee? Because I remember reading in one of my borrowed books a while ago (I think it was Lewis Napper's Winsock 2.0) about installing/registering services, and one such service was DNS... you fill out a structure and stick it in a function, and it registers it or something. Anyone want to clarify that for me? lol... it sounded great but seemed a bit too easy.
