    Microsoft hiding things for users??

    Hey everyone,

    I dont know wether somebody already posted this one, if so my bad. Anyhow as i was browsing on my favorite security group site i stumbled in onto this

    I have not checked these things myself on my system but i will asap. Now as said in my second link this think can cause one kind of trouble indeed.

    Now im asking myself, how much should we believe in their products. As in how do we know wether its doing what we want, since it can obviously ( as you all know as programmers ) do other things on the background at the same time.

    Anyhow i was just wondering i dont know what you guys think about this....

    PS: I didnt want to put the link in here just anyhow since i don't know wether it is against the rules of the board or not ( i should read them again since i think there ought to be some changes in one year).

    Bye for now,

    Ganglylamb

    Well, some months ago I read something on a friend's site about how the next Microsoft would require online registration etc. for a lot of installs. So he switched to Linux. I'll see if I can get it.

    I was bored and looked into it, and looky what I found... One of the files tells windows to send something to this file on 66.185.95.130.

    wpad.dat: (wordpad?)
    Code:
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    {
    if (shExpMatch(host, "wustat.windows.com")||
        shExpMatch(host, "www.torontomls.net")||
        shExpMatch(host, "v4.windowsupdate.*")||
        shExpMatch(url, "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll*")||
        shExpMatch(url, "http://www.torontomls.net/Login.asp*")||
        shExpMatch(host, "windowsupdate.*"))

            return "DIRECT";

    if (url.substring(0, 5) == "http:" || url.substring(0, 4) == "ftp:")  return "PROXY cache:8080; DIRECT";

    return "DIRECT";

    }
    What exactly would that do, I can tell its in C or C++, but I cant tell what it does. Just thought I could post ^^

    Looks more like Java than C or C++. Where did that file come from again?

    WPAD = Web Proxy Auto Detect. It is just another way of configuring proxy servers.

    wont matter much with the whole palladium idea which has intel and AMD coming on the bandwagon. do a google search for "Trusted Computing Initiative" and read what comes up. Basically to summarize, there are going to be anti piracy measures incorperated directly in your hardware which will only let programs that are "registered" with the hardware to run. This could mean that programmers would be plain out of luck unless they are professionals and have hardware that allows them to run new software unregistered.
    there used to be something here, but not anymore

    Well what about reverse compatibility? I mean, my collection of old adventure games isn't going to be registered, and neither is anything else I own. You'd have to buy all new software if you wanted to upgrade.

    Not a big deal, just don't use IE, that's a given.

    But I just don't trust any company that sells an OS like that. If I pay 200 bucks for something, it damn well better work and not have security patches up the arse every month.

    I don't think MS could get away with making you register every piece of software you own, that's waaaaay overboard. People wouldn't do it, and their sales would suffer. It doesn't matter how bad they want to put a stranglehold on their customers, if they start dissappearing they'll stop.
