Patch not working for Police Quest 1 VGA

I'm playing Police Quest 1: Pursuit of the Death Angel (the VGA Remake that comes in the Collection). I got to the scene at the end of Burt's Park and the game froze. It was no hassle to figure out from Google that this is a well-known bug. I donwloaded the patch, but when I run Install.bat from a floppy disk like it recommends, I'm asked what version of the game I'm playing, I enter "1" for the Collection Version, and then I'm told "Set unexpected at this time", and the program quits abruptly. Anyone got any ideas?

I don't know about your problem, but I loved that game.

Yes - the whole series is quite fun. Have you played SWAT?

I played one of them... I think it was the third. That was pretty cool, but it didn't have anywhere near the character of the adventure games.

    I miss the adventure games

Well you can disassemble the patch and then manually patch the problem yourself. If you google you might be able to find out the exact address the patch starts patching at. Most of the time it is one or two instructions that need patched.

I never liked the Police Quest games, but loved Kings Quest and Space Quest.

Yeah I like Space Quest. King's Quest I never found all that ineteresting but I still play it occasionally. Anyway - all this talking got me thinking and I just ordered Swat 2. I still haven't finished the first one (the old lady always shoots me...), so I guess I better get back to work.

Hey speaking of Police Quest - at the end of SWAT - how do you know when the game's over? I finished at Eastmasn Enterprises, and then it made me redo the warehouse scenario. Do I need to become a sniper and then redo Eastman?

I never finished it. All I kept getting is 'PUP...the LASH is not a toy...please keep your comments relative to the situation at hand."

The game sucks IMO. Worst SWAT programmed, but 2 was not much better. SWAT 3 is in a league of its own and is a great game.

You're supposed to use hand signals until you become an element leader. Also don't forget to mirror corners - they never tell you that but once you do it once the rest of the game is easy.

edit: Yes - I figured that out yesterday and finally got the old lady to surrender.
