    Intelligent vs Smart

What do you think of the two? I've been sitting here...listening to my final fantasy playlists and reading some AI articles and it's brought to my mind what really is the difference between being smart and intelligent?

I like how this site describes AI and I truly find it fascinating.

"In society today many people base intelligence on academic achievement. This is highly unfair. People develop at different speeds and thrive under different circumstances. One person may peak academically at fifteen years old, another at twenty-one. Hence their achievements will be different. Everybody has different skills and trying to base a person's ability by global standards in unreasonable. The world today is obsessed with qualifications and obtaining pieces of paper demonstrating that you can use, for example, MS Windows. If someone is an Oxford University graduate people automatically assume they are intelligent. This however does not take into consideration their social ability and also whether they are just intelligent in one particular niche. For example someone could graduate with a First class degree from Oxford University in Computational Mathematics but not be able to spell very well. It could be questioned whether they more or less intelligent that someone who obtained a third class degree in the same subject from a less pretigiuous university but who can spell much better?"

I was wondering about the two definitions so I went to dictionary.com and looked up the words intelligence and smart and that kinda reiterated my view on the two words in that being smart is basically how much you know, whereas being intelligent is how fast and how much you can learn things.

I honestly think AI is a very interesting field, it's fascinating to try and figure out how people learn, and I think once we do figure that out we will have many breakthroughs in AI development.

it's almost 4 in the morning and my posts are making less and less sense.....

I really liked that quote above because I've been thinking a lot about where I want to go to college, and now that I'm probably moving back to Canada, I'm looking more towards Canadian colleges/universities. Since we're moving to Calgary I'm looking at some of the universities there, but I'm also looking at waterloo and some of the universities in BC, so who knows. I've also found a girl way back from when I lived in calgary in 2nd grade (she still lives in calgary) and I used to go over to her house and play video games all the time and she's absolutely amazing, we've gone 8 years without any form of contact, but we still talk like we've never even been apart. She's also still really in to video games and is actually in to some of the stuff I do coding-wise, which is something you don't find too often in a girl. blaaah, so many things going on, too many things to ponder about at once

anything i said in the post above probably didn't make sense....but that's ok......it's not against any forum rules to have to make sense...especially in the general discussion forums, bwha

maybe plain mathematics, but nothing that actually has to do with computers. When one uses a computer to program algorithms; one has to learn a new language/syntax/(way of thought), and quite frankly if someone cannot spell or write properly in their native tongue, they will be screwed in a computer language.

People develop at different speeds and thrive under different circumstances. One person may peak academically at fifteen years old, another at twenty-one. Hence their achievements will be different.
it is under the ability of learning that we can more easily qualify geniuses(i.e. people that pick up a book once, have memorized everything of importance... and more). There is a far cry from 15 year old who peaks out at a community college and a 25 year old who peaks at MIT after obtaining his PhD.

Also, all the stuff about different "niches" of intellect I learned about in Psych. 101 at my local college. Basically you have crazy things like:

    1) emotional intelligence
    2) spatial intelligence
    3) physical intelligence(if you are a good athlete you have this)
    4) analytical intelligence

I personally wonder what other people's opinions of intelligence are.
there used to be something here, but not anymore

What exactly is a "Go board?" If it's anything like Go Moku, I'm interested, otherwise just curious.

    play go online at kiseido.com

you won't have much fun playing with yourself, although there's a good chance you can locate a club at your university/college once you go

It IS GoMoku! I LOVE that game. I actually wrote a network playable version of Go(Moku) which is chat-enabled and has an observer-type mode (that is still a little buggy). You can also play a local two player game or a single player game, but that isn't much fun because the AI is very easily beatable (it focuses mainly on defense).

Wanna check it out? I can't believe some of you people like the game. I LOVE it, but could never find anyone who likes it other than online at PlaySite.net (I think). I used to be so good at it.

(please excuse the plethora of attachments)

it does look similar but is nothing like them. Go is way more of an intellectual game.

btw: i think GoMoku is the chinese ( maybe korean ? ) name of the game. Go is the japanese name. The all have the same rules but use different scoring systems.

GoMoku is the shortened version of the Japanese name (which in its entirety is translated as "5 stones in a row").

So, ggs, Go is not 5 in a row? Can you save me searching time and explain the difference?

the object of go is to surround territory (empty points) on the board. you can capture your opponents pieces by surrounding them completely, too. that's the rules in a nutshell, but it's not much more complex when you actually play

Two good resources I found for the rules. The first one's a more in-depth programming version of it that might interest some people here.

    -edit-
and no, go is not 5 in a row, it's a game based on conquering territory. Ever seen the movie Pi?

It was in A Beautiful Mind too - you saw them just putting down pieces trying to surround eachother.
