    > I think the US.... uh.... our school...
    This is the part where we drop the analogy, because damn, it's getting lame.

    > The school has two newspapers by the way... the Fox times, and if you don't read them both you're not getting both sides of the story.

    I get my news from as many sources as I can. Fox is actually pretty decent for immediate breaking stuff where O'Reilly, Hannity, Hume and whoever else haven't gotten a chance to ruin it with editorializing.

    > the US has no interests there

    We really don't have any interests in Iraq, either. As conservatives are so fond of pointing out, we hardly get any oil from them, compared to other places around the world.

    Uh.... give us a hug?

    Then please explain why gas prices are skyrocketing? I'm not arguing - I genuinely want to know what the explanation is then.

    (I'm going to bed - I haven't been stumped!)

    Why are they skyrocketing when we've invaded a country we didn't really get a whole lot from in the first place? I don't know, maybe because we took destabilization in the ME one step further? We ........ed off a lot of other countries, which seems to be a theme of Bush's presidency.

    Also, they always get higher in the summer ()

    >>We really don't have any interests in Iraq, either. As conservatives are so fond of pointing out, we hardly get any oil from them, compared to other places around the world.<<

    The conservatives don't point out that the US has not built or upgraded its oil -> petrol refineries for decades. They can not be upgraded quickly (or cheaply).

    The refineries still require the low suphur oil known as 'sweet crude'. The US now has to pay the more expensive prices to get this better quality, rarer oil or import the petrol (and pay someone else to refine it).

    With Iraqs increased production, oil prices will fall again, allowing cheaper imports of petrol.

    >>Then please explain why gas prices are skyrocketing?

    Basic economics

    Less supply == higher prices
    Greater demand == higher prices

    This is due to;

    the Saudis becoming less friendly / trusted. The Saudis used to stop OPEC's plans to raise prices by increasing production.

    China's increased demand.

    Iraq's production under the UN's 'oil for food programe' offline. (ie Australia traded wheat for oil)

    I actually highly appreciate this thread. I appreciate it because, despite the fact that Bush is the only conservative president I've ever strongly disagreed with on *anything*, I do believe that he is in Iraq because he thinks he is doing the right thing. I don't think Bush is an unintelligent person, as Moore and others try to point out, and conservative government can definitely be a good thing in the interests of all people (we need our government to be as small as possible).

    I also think that we have every right to roll over whatever nation stands in our way, but only if we have justified cause, and the support from the rest of the world (which, we would have had in a heartbeat had we located weapons of mass destruciton in Iraq).

    I also happen to think that John Kerry will be more effective at protecting the United States.

    edit

    And another thing. I work in a somewhat dangerous indutry (I am a part owner and technician/engineer for one of the fastest ferries in the world), and subsequently I've known people to get seriously injured, i.e one man lost his left foot in a clamp when docking into port, only to be minimally covered by health insurance. I think that the medicare and medicaid systems need revamping, because we cannot have both private healthcare, as is guaranteed in a free society and condoned by republicans, but also diminish the extent of healthcare.

    well you did not want to blame the Saudis for obvious reasons so divert attention by blaming Iraq...

    > we need our government to be as small as possible

    That's a matter of opinion. Besides, our government right now isn't conservative, at least not fiscally. Socially, absolutely. Fiscally, no.

    > I think that the medicare and medicaid systems need revamping, because we cannot have both private healthcare, as is guaranteed in a free society and condoned by republicans, but also diminish the extent of healthcare.

    That sentence is confusing.

    > opinions shared with half of America.

    I didn't think your opinions were that out there at all. And any opinion is shared with "half of America" - we're so sharply divided right now that that's all there is

    > well you did not want to blame the Saudis for obvious reasons so divert attention by blaming Iraq...

    Screw this "you" crap. I didn't do anything at all. 99.99999% percent of the US population didn't do anything at all.

    Besides, what the hell does your post have to do with any of mine?

    I meant to say that Republicans tend to support private enterprise, but at the same time Bush is essentially against health insurance. We have it, but there isn't enough, *in my opinion*. In that light, it puts the average joe in a pickle: private health care costs can go virtually untamed, but Bush doesn't want to keep health insurance neck in neck with what private healthcare wants to charge. It's pretty damn close, but not quite there in my opinion.

    edit

    and, keep in mind, health care typically just costs a lot anyway, without the 'private business' aspect of it getting in the way. The man I mentioned was tagged with about $10 million in bills after his accident...the family had to declare bankruptcy, but he made it in the end.

    No argument here. Keep in mind I am voting for Kerry this time

    That's pretty much what I thought you meant, but it was a little unclear to me.

    >The man I mentioned was tagged with about $10 million in bills after his accident...

    Holy crap.

    So, would you think some sort of socialized health care program would be good, even though it'd leave to bigger government?

    Well, no, not exactly. I honestly think that there should be more interaction between healthcare and government, *but limited*, so that it falls far short of being socialist. Canada has free healthcare (which is where the ferry goes to by the way), but things such as gas cost twice as much over there. There is no perfect answer.

    eh

    edit

    Japan, as far as I know, has a 'book' that basically entitles the maximum cost and apprenticeship that is allowed to be charged by private healthcare. Doctors can still make money, as they should (stressful job!), but the average Joe can no longer be forced to pay 250$ dollars for a special air cast that entails no more material than a holloween costume. This also makes the cost of health insurance go down, and the system apparently works.

    Will somebody please think of the children!!??

    I must say I think this thread has been unprecedently productive.

    Someone mentioned Moore... What's with the cap? That's about all I have to say... I think I've already made my points. Besides Govt., I hate when we fight.... Anyway - has anyone seen the cover of the current Reader's Digest? Are those pictures fake or what? Kerry looks somewhat life-like, but the Bush picture looks really faked...
