>Think about it though, 1000 megs for e-mail. No pop-ups on related text based links. And it is supposed to have a chat client built into it or something along the lines. I want one. Can't wait til it is done. What do you think?
Thinking... Do I care? Mmmm....
Nope.
This is just gonna mean everyone sending whopping great attachments everywhere and masses of spam. If something's free, it ain't worth it. There's always a catch somewhere. What are Google up to? Apart from machine reading all your mail, that is, and directing adverts at you, if that wasn't bad enough.
I've just discovered a great way of communicating - voice over analogue. It works, why not give it a try?
Sorry to be so cynical. Rant over
Well I've had a couple emails using gmail and the way they track a conversation is great. Its nicely nested and very easy to navigate and use. I haven't seen any ads as of yet so can't comment on that part of it.
Its no different from the google ad bars on the bottom of websites or the banners in opera. They spider for keywords with software its not like they're sitting there READING your mail. What are Google up to? Besides its being read by someone anyway no matter who you use.

I was just ranting, playing devils advocate, without trying to be too serious.
However, when I think about it - seriously now - the purpose of this 'machine reading' is presumably to build a profile of you. Let's suppose in an email you tell a friend of your bad experiences in alcoholic drinking. Are you to be targeted by adverts promoting Carlsberg and Jack Daniels?
Even if the text of your email is not human read, the profile generated from it can be and it can be shared with others. Even if Google's sign-up agreement says the opposite, you can bet there'll be a clause which says the agreement can be changed at anytime. "We have no plans at the moment to do xyz (but we might have tomorrow)".
If your postal service said they were going to open all your mail in transit, so that it could be 'machine read' in order to determine what junk mail you should receive, would you be happy? Perhaps they'll justify it by saying that it will reduce the cost of posting the letter. Although here in the UK, if the Royal Mail tried to implement such a thing, the cost of posting a letter would actually go up signficantly in order bail out the resulting IT catastrophe.

If you don't like the way that gMail targets advertisements, don't use it. It's as simple as that.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah
