Supreme Court - Producing IDs to police

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/06/21/sc....id/index.html

I am completely bias on this issue since my brother is a police officer. If I remember this case correctly the police officer could definatly approached the situtation better but ultimatly I do think you should give your name when asked by a police officer. I don't really see how it is a big privacy issue nor how it could possiblity be considered a voilation of the "Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination."

I don't remember and the article doesn't say if this overturned the 9th Circuit Court's decision but I wouldn't be surprised as then get turned over regularly.

uhm.... not necessarily. Like for example, if I end up changing my name to an arabic one, I definately will not give my name to a police officer around the south unless it is absolutely necessary. I do not understand how you can say there isn't any privacy issue with your name, as the cop might be some racist person who if your last name is "Stein" or some other jewish name will box your ears in.

Fearing police reaction is not a privacy issue. That would fall under discrimation. Sorry but the need for the police to do their job outweighs any possible discrimation that might occur. There are racists all over not just the south.

Your an A$$hole. I lived in the south for a long time, and its stereotypical dickheads like you that make people think the way they do.

    Get a damn life.

Exactly, you are from LA, I am talking about the people that have lived in the south for generations and have been indoctrinated with insane racial ideals. So for future reference:

Southerner : native of Arkansas/Missisippi/Georgia, who belongs to a known fundamentalist denomination, and has less than a high school education.
[edit]Just be careful what you say. You can offend some people

Not to fan the flames, but let's not forget LA representative John Cooksey, who said, "If I see someone come in and he's got a diaper on his head and a fan belt around that diaper on his head, that guy needs to be pulled over and checked." (The diaper being a turban apparently.)

thankfully politians are not the police. Also to clarify a point on this case, the person in question was standing outside of the vechicle. When you are pulled over you must produce the driver's license upon request. The issue was if a person who was approached must produce identification upon request.

EvBladeRunnervE - in light of the Supreme Court descision....if you're in the south, wouldn't you be better off giving them your name and id? If you don't then you would face arrest and possible jail time, thus exposing yourself to a greater chance of rascism.

you know, ever think you might just be one of the lucky few(read, part of the good 'ole boy system)? Texas is great, the Carolinas are great; however, the following are not : Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia.

you are right there, I forgot the way it is in jails/prisons.

around 70-80% of the people where I live at( Pope country, Arkansas) feel the same way. The cops tend to be better than average if you contrast the bad cop % to the bad people %.'

    just an offset remark:

Rod, or for that matter all of you, how many states/cities have you lived in? I have lived in California,Texas,Arkansas,Missouri, and Maryland living in multiple different cities in each, so I can fairly say my opinion is based off of a broader sample of people than some of you.

    EDIT:

I know that, I was talking about the broader view of this, since I am totally ok with presenting ID if being stopped for a traffic/criminal violation. I do not think I should give my name to some cop if I am casually minding my own business with no reason to be expected of a crime.

I think you shouldn't be scared of the South, only Louisiana. They're all queers down there, so be careful if they throw you in jail, you know. Right, kermi3?

Anyway, I'm quite torn on the isue. On the one hand, I'm wary about anything that has "..which helps us to track down suspected terrorists" tacked onto the end of it. It seems like a weak excuse to hold up a controversial position. On the other hand, it's just your name. Lie about it, if you have to.

now that is actually a crime, and should be punished(if it is during the course of being arrested/reprimanded for a criminal/traffic violation).

Just FYI I did a search on the above link for "terror" and didn't find anything.
