    Fax problem

Ok so I need to fax something to my employer. I think to myself no problem I'm on the net I'll just fax.....wait a minute. I don't have a modem, but my DSL is on the phone line.....still no go.

What we have here is a tech gap. The internet has evolved from the days of dialup but the fax tech has not. Probably because high speed fax is just stupid and not needed. But it might be said that one might make a small fortune if they developed a fax machine that could take faxes say over the internet and over the phone lines.

You could just send it to an e-mail and have them print it out....but they didn't want to do that. Many small fortunes have been made by those who capitalized on convenience. Perhaps this is an area that deserves some attention.

Well there are companies that do voice over IP and some even can go from a computer on one end to a telephone on the other. I see no reason why it couldn't interface with a fax machine.

Though I don't know a lot about voice over IP so there might be something in the encoding and decoding or latency that could prevent it.

You do know that there is software to send faxes over the net to a fax machine, right?

Well obviously not....or I would have used it.

I just did the lazy typical Windows user thing and if Windows didn't do it, I didn't look elsewhere.

I still think you could do this in a machine and get it to sell rather well.

Hmm do they make faxes that have both a telephone and network hookups?

I dont think so...which is why I posted. Wasn't even aware of the problem till I tried faxing and realized I didn't have a modem anymore.

If they do, I haven't seen any of them yet. If they don't...let's get rich Thantos.

    the following:

    http://www.businessleader.com/bl/feb97/tech.html

    and I quote:

Several manufacturers have demonstrated a fax machine that connects to your computer network just like another computer or printer, yet has the capability to use the Internet (rather than a standard phone line) to transmit and receive faxes without actually making a "phone call." If one of these Internet-ready fax machines was also located in your California office, then you could transmit faxes all day, back and forth across the United States, for free.
shame that Bubba didn't realize the need for an internet fax machine maybe ten years ago, then he would be pretty filthy rich.
