The silmarillion is good, but it is dense, and it is more of an epic history than a single story. The quest for the silmarils is, of course, the common thread that runs through the novel, but the novel is more of a series of interconnecting yet distinct stories.

How do you know? I have an old copy. I'm thinking about reading it. Although, no time to. I'm still going through petzold. That is what I spend my free time doing. And I'm going to start assembler with the Z8 chip, so I have my hands full.

I just started the hobbit. It is really good so far. The dwarves (and Gandalf) barged into Bilbo Baggins' house and he still doesn't know what is going on. It is great so far

My understanding is that Tolkien was 'creating' a language for some degree/thesis/other.
The LOTR was his way of orgainising it so it was consistent and made sense.
(According to my semantics professor (almost) father-in law)

I have red LotR for five or six times,
Silmarillion for three times and the Hobbit
for one time.
Althought I've red them in Finnish, but who cares...
I just loved those books, and I'm truely waiting for the movie(s).
BtW:
Bilbo did NOT have a beard!
And neither did Frodo, Merri and Pippin.(I'm not sure about Sam).

I'm not sure about the names of those hobbits but I think they are right.
