    envelopes...

i wrote this earlier, and i thought it might be a good topic...

    >y'know, what about the rest of the world? seems that all of our concentration is pushing the envelope, but what about sealing it up...

i mean to say, the average of the condition of the world can be improved if we go the lesser countries and get them up to speed... harder better faster stronger...

i suppose it's just a matter of diverting resources... but i'm not the programmer at the keyboard on this one, so it was a suggestion for the more knowledgeble, on that account...

Lots of humanitarian groups take care of this on a "basic needs" level. Techno-wise, heard of Geekcorps (geekcorps.org)? They're kind of spreading the cyber-gospel and bringing und(er)eveloped countries (formerly known as third-worlds) up to speed (or trying, at least). Kind of a neat concept.

yeah, but a single group cannot make the difference. And the other thing is that there are lots of "help programs" which end up doing a great deal of irreversible damage to the group they're helping.

i'd like to see an example of this irreversible damage... and i agree, you cannot play god in the sense that you are controlling or influencing the futures of a group of people... well you could, but i myself would not be up to task, especially with hard decisions...

We'll be diverting a lot of aid to Afghanistan very soon. No doubt about that. As to whether or not we can turn all those rocks into
green grass and tomato fields, though, is a far different matter.

I am going to regret having said this, but not meaning to turn this conversation into a political struggle, "Plan Colombia " is a very good example, you would undertand it if you saw it with Colombian eyes
