    You know, Hotmail really sucks.

I deleted every message from every folder two
days ago. I just checked my hotmail account a
few minutes ago; I have a total of 70 new messages
(20=inbox 50=Junk Mail) and not one of them is from
    anybody I know.

How the freak does this happen? I don't advertise
my hotmail address (except on my webpage, but
nobody goes there), and I don't subscribe to any
    of these newsletters I'm getting.

Do any of you have hotmail accounts? If so,
do you get an excessive amount of spam?

    Excuse spelling/grammar. I'm not feeling
    well enough to fix stuff.

I do get spam. Copious amounts of the stuff...

    ...it's either weight-loss, sex-aids or make a million.

It get's slightly annoying but it all goes in my junk mail folder so I'm not that bothered now.

hmmm... y'know i've never actually had any problems at all... the only things i get that i might conder 'junk' are the hotmail msn stuff... second to that is post reply notifications... maybe it's because you put all those checkboxes when you signed up about recieving email on various subjects...

I've hardly got junk mail, I still have these "MORTGAGE RATE ALERT" messages, but I get them delivered to my junk mail folder.

I like hotmail. it's fast and it is mildly safe, all I need.

I have hotmail and I only get spam like once every two weeks...
I keep on getting this stupid stupid stupid diploma getting ad...IT IS SO ANNOYING...and they somehow made it so that I can't unsubscribe or anything...their e-mail address is hidden I think...and I can't reply. AND THEY KEEP SENDING IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!!! ARRRRGGGHHH.... *sigh* and there is another mail with an attachment and the body of it says that the person needed my advice on some sort of thing and ask me to open the attachment, what a retard! like I am going to fall for that! And I keep asking who the person is and they just send me the EXACT same mail again...AAAAHHH...so dumb! the weird thing is the email address of the person keeps changing every time they send me somthing and most of them are real...how the heck have so many email addresses??

If you have a real flatrate ( don't pay per timeunit and/or transfer ) I suggest the following procedure: I did that once, and never heard of the guys again: Send them email. Get their adress and use it to send them unwanted replies. They won't notice one mail. So send them as much as you can. I can upload 16K (ADSL), so I guess they didn't like their inbox traffic of 16K * 60 *60 * 20 while I was sleeping and at work not needing my line... opps, got a GB in your inbox... sorry. Well, it won't impress them much, but it will keep their admin busy for an hour cleaning up the mess and your adress isn't worth another hour of admin work in the future, so...

Oh... one thing: Keep your address away from webpages. Or at least keep your address in a non-machine-readable form. Programming a webspider is easy, I bet there are some for download for free.

I had some junk mail a while ago, didn't reacted to it and now most of it stopped. some weren't small advertising companies. I got some mails from Microsoft and Sony. the microsoft thing was somehow interesting. It was an invitation for a seminare for .NET. didn't go. It was 200 euro for 2days. Still wondering how they got my email address and know that I like programmer?????. But if they would kept on sending me those junk mail I would have done what nv said.

    I used to get this mail on hotmail titled;

    "Horny Homos..... Lickin Lezbos"

Straight to the bin with that.......

I delete on avarage 90% of the hotmail stuff I get..... If I leave it for a day I have loads of junk.... I dont bother with the filter cuz I am so used to deleting it.......

Sometimes I get a message and if I look at the RCPT TO: line on the header it has robjford, robkford, roblford...etc.... They must be sending them randomly.........

They often have a link to "unsubscribe", but I always wondered that if this was random mailing, would you be alerting them to your presence if you tried to unsubscribe? They would definately know you are there after that........

    >What are webspiders?

Webspiders, webcrawlers or webbugs in general are programs that start at one site, follow all links of that site and recursivly crawl through the web, page after page. What they do with the data is up to your imagination, but you can use it for search engines, or look for email addresses to spam or find things or whatever you like. Google calls theirs robots. Well behaved crawlers like the search engine one's can be stopped by meta-tags in the webpages. I assume spammers don't care.

I don't really understand. So webspiders are a bad thing?
    and what are meta-tags?

you also said something about keeping your email address in a non-machine readable form. what do you mean by that?

I'm just learning html and want to set up a website. where can I find some info on how to protect it? (if this is possible)

    >I don't really understand. So webspiders are a bad thing?

As every tool in the universe, it is not evil. Tools in itself are never good or bad. It depends on the use. Webspiders used by Spammers: Bad things. Webcrawlers used by Search Engines: good thing.

    >and what are meta-tags?

Meta tags are tags containing data not used in page display, like authoring software or author name. It can also contain tags for webcrawlers.

    >you also said something about keeping your email address in a >non-machine readable form. what do you mean by that?

    [email protected]
    would be machine readable

[email protected] ( remove the XXX )
is not readable by a spider. It can't understand my comment and will therefore send it's spam to the wrong address.

    >I'm just learning html and want to set up a website.
    >where can I find some info on how to protect it?

You can't protect it from malicious spiders. Everything readable by a human without interpretation is readable by a spider. You can control well behaving robots by using meta tags, but those are your friends anyway.

I assume google has some info on it's own robots
